As for the much talked-about "noise" issue - here's my 2 cents. For any of these aluminum pads, you WILL get some noise. It may startle you first as its a "different" kind of sound - metal on metal (assuming you're using Apple Magic Mouse) as the mouse-belly will touch the pad as you rest your palm on top and you'll hear the scratchy sound. On any surface there is some noise - just with standard / non-metal ones we are used to the "normal" kind (and yes somewhat muted).
So what to do? If you want this - two options.
1 - I bet you'll simply get used to it. I stopped "noticing" after a couple of days.
2 - There is a simple hack, that will mute the sound some. Take a piece of thin cardboard (or any other material whose on-metal sound characteristic you can "live with" better. Felt, piece of plastic, rubber whatever) and using a tape, slap it across the bottom of mouse / battery cover). This will create some space to reduce / eliminate the metal-on-metal friction. Try it! See picture if it'll help. Caution - you'd be tempted, as I was, to slap one to front as well and you'll find that it creates too much distance to surface (mouse pad here) for the optical engine at front and the mouse movement itself will stop or be problematic.
My only wish - if it were an inch or so smaller in dimensions.. but that seems to be standard or perhaps gaming is not my thing.
Unfortunately the second one received was terrible. They have obviously done a lot of cost reduction in their manufacturing process at the expense of reduced quality. Instead of a fully rubberized backing material it now has a few small cheap round rubber feet. The front is even worse: it is now slightly rough, which drags on the mouse and makes it scratching noises when moving the mouse. The colour is also dark grey instead of deep black with some uneven patches you can see with naked eye but unfortunately they don't show in the pictures below.
The old "Mouse-Mat II" pads I've been nursing along for the past 10 years have finally worn out and forced my hand. They tracked well with the stock feet, what I call the pads on the bottom of my mice. But finding a vinyl, or plastic mouse pad to replace them was becoming difficult. Enter Jelly Comb.
I agree with the other reviewers that said the scratching noice with this pad is annoying, and my MX-610 and MX-620 sort of skid along with their stock feet. So instead of giving up on a mouse pad that stays where you put it and looks great, I decided to do some problem solving.
Smearing something on it never works, I've tried it before. Buying new mice is out of the question. Logitech doesn't make laser mice like these anymore. What about the feet? I asked myself. First, I tried felt, but it caused to much drag. Then it occurred to me to try thin Velcro.
What a difference. The scratching disappeared to nothing. The drag is perfect. And the tracking of these laser mice on this pad is great.
This is my first Amazon review that I'm including photos with, so I hope they look OK.
If you're looking for a solution to your tracking problems, and you're not afraid of changing the feet of your mouse, this is probably the best performance you can achieve. It's the best I've had in a long time.
Now I'm headed into my cart and pull the trigger on the black one for my 18.4" Qosmio desktop replacement that I still lug around to my clients.
It doesn't slide around on my desk at all, yet has just enough (very consistent) friction between my mouse and the pad for very precise and sure control. I wouldn't call myself a "gamer" but I do play enough tactical and FPS games to appreciate settling your target reticule quickly and accurately.
I also noticed a nice detail that I didn't see anywhere else. All around the perimeter, where the aluminum has been cut and finished, they left a sliver of beveled, polished aluminum. Its a very minor detail that you don't really see in the pictures, but it makes a very functional piece very attractive as well.
Would I buy it again? Oh yes, I have a computer at work too, and going back to my nasty old neoprene mousepad on monday feels like punishment.
Would I recommend it? Pretty sure I already have. If you're waffling, just do it, I highly doubt you'll regret it.
20170309 Edit: Yeah, couldn't handle neoprene after using this at home. I actually keep it in my laptop bag now (if you have a gaming laptop, it really helps you play FPS games while sitting in a recliner) and had to buy another one for work. It's a very simple device, but I'm not sure I'd willingly go without it again.
