A giant fireball blows through a nightclub after which this girl is drugged and sacraficed by a cultish group, after which she attains super powers after resurrecting from the dead. She, now a beasty, starts to take revenge on every male who didn't even have anything to do with the crime, but it makes sense because instead, they are exposed and punished for their vile non-cerebral male natures, failing to resist a beautiful female who forwardly insists. This is tolerable until beasty kills homegirl's bf, whereby she then kills beasty and in effect becomes a beasty herself. She now has hovering powers and the raw strength to power drive a full-grown black woman across a room. It ends with new beasty hitch hiking into an old sketchy man's car, set out to avenge beasty's killers and for making her into the beasty she is as well.

The scene in the class room where the girls were arguing about something being true or false and the one mentioned her point being on WiKi thus it MUST be true because she was told it was online. That was a 2009 movie, that's now the state of a vast amount of western society.

"Hell is a teenage girl!"

"Hell, yes!" In the fall of 2009, I happened to see "Jennifer's Body" on the big screen when it was released in movie theaters. I'll be totally honest. I took a chance on this movie and was very skeptical at first. But I really, really, really loved this movie! The reason why I liked it is because I understood it. Like the dark comedy, "Heathers" (1988), which loosely inspired it, "Jennifer's Body" is a dark supernatural coming of age story. (Both movies contain lots metaphors.) At the time when it was released, reviews for "Jennifer's Body" were mixed; a reflection of the fact that many movie reviewers were confused by the story. Is it a horror movie or a comedy? They didn't understand that it is a mixture of both - a coming of age story disguised as a teen horror movie with some black comedic elements, set in a high school.

But the real horror is not the killings shown on screen, but the pain of adolescence. It's not the girl who becomes possessed by a demon and turns into a serial killing machine that is so horrible, but rather that high school can be a mean, vicious, cruel, brutal, and very scary place. (Not for everyone, but certainly for some.) The real monster of the story is not the possessed cheerleader, but what some people transform into as they grow older and leave behind the innocence of their childhood. If you understand that, then the entire movie makes sense. However if you don't understand that or you are expecting a slasher movie which this isn't, you will be disappointed. (Look for the metaphors to understand what the story is really about!)

But "Jennifer's Body" is also a lot of fun. My favorite line in the movie is: "She can fly?!!" The humorous moments are intended to give the audience an occasional break from the oppressive darker aspects of the story, which deals with a difficult painful age for young people.

The writing and dialogue were really good, as was the directing. As for Fox's acting - she was fine and did a great job bringing the main title character to life. One of the strengths of "Jennifer's Body" is that it is a breath of fresh air in the era of massive "reboots", prequels, sequels, and remakes. It tried break away from the current trend of movies by doing something totally different. I respect the makers of this film, writer Diablo Cody and director Karyn Kusama, for what they tried to accomplish with this movie. Unfortunately there are way too many filmmakers in Hollywood who keep recycling the same old material again and again. Yet when Cody and Kusama tried to do something new and original, they got viciously attacked for it. Screw the naysayers! As far as I'm concerned, "Jennifer's Body" was one of the better movies of 2009.

What shocked me the most was not the content of this movie, but the way some critics had brutally attacked it. It should be pointed out that Roger Ebert, one of the most respected and best reviewers out there, gave "Jennifer's Body" a B / Three Stars! (As for all those reviewers who bashed this movie, it is clear that they certainly didn't understand it. I'm so glad that I didn't listen to them and saw this movie on the big screen anyway.)

Although this film may not have done very well at the box office, that is NOT an indication that it is in anyway a bad movie! (Some of Hollywood's greatest movies were not a box office success, while some of its worst were.) J.B. will live on and definitely develop a strong cult following. Not only am I recommending "Jennifer's Body", but bought it as soon as it was released on DVD and look forward to watching it again and again! (For other diehard fans like myself, there is also a 112 page companion graphic novel to "Jennifer's Body" by BOOM! Studios that expands the story with additional new material.) My one and ONLY complaint about "Jennifer's Body" is the DVD commentary could have used a little more energy from the commentators.

I really love this movie and wish there were more movies like it. As the ads for this movie indicated, hell is definitely a teenage girl!!!

Very good dark comedy-horror flick of 2 friends turned enemies because of evil

Needy Lesnicki (Amanda Seyfried) is the narrator of this horror flick. She used to be a normal high school kid full of hormones, having a boyfriend named Chip (Johnny Simmons) and her best friend Jennifer (Megan Fox). Needy was the square girl and Jennifer was a popular cheer leader. They’d been friends since childhood but evil would come between them with one becoming a reluctant hero and the other a boy eater.

The supernatural in the film was mixed with some very dry humor. Needy and Jennifer go to a small bar to see a Rock band. As they start their first song a fire suddenly breaks out and people start dying left and right. Needy and Jennifer escape the burning inferno and outside they run into the band’s singer. He acts nonchalant and asks Jennifer to get into his van which she does like she’s under his spell. Jennifer later turns up at Needy’s house with blood all over her and spitting black goo out of her mouth. It’s a great two scenes. Later they show the band’s motivation and it even gets better. A Rock band brings the evil to a little town? They turn Jennifer into a monster? It’s cliché and genius at the same time.

The dark jokes really come later when Jennifer seduces a student who lost a friend in the fire. She takes him to the woods and suddenly all these animals including two rabbits gather around and stare at them. A teacher later hears the boy’s screams but thinks he’s just mourning from his loss and says to himself, “Let it all out.”

This movie explores the relationship between Needy and Jennifer that go from best friends to enemies because evil comes between them.

why is this movie so underrated?

I love this movie...I had bought it years ago when it first went on sale and lent it to a friend, who lent it to another friend and then I never saw it again. Decided to buy it again recently and it was totally worth it. It's a dark movie, yes, but it also pokes fun at itself; I don't think it's the kind of movie that's meant to be taken super seriously. But I do think it has something to say about female friendship, young love, and a woman's self-worth if you read between the lines. ***SPOILER WARNING*** In the movie Jennifer thinks her "saving grace" is virginity, but that's actually what dooms her. I think this movie was ahead of it's time in that it shows a woman's sexual experience to be valuable and empowering. To me this is the perfect movie to watch when you're in the mood for something dark, darkly funny, moody, or when it's near Halloween. It's not scary at all, although it does have creepy/bloody horror moments, and there were a lot of parts that I found funny and relatable. ***ALSO*** The blu-ray version does inlcude both the theatrical and extended versions. (I personally prefer the theatrical version.) There are several featurettes in the special features, a gag reel, and director/writer commentary.

Misguided marketing - better than you'd think

To be honest, I didn't have fond memories of Jennifer's Body first time around. I think at the time I subconsciously discounted Megan Fox's performance given her role in the mostly forgettable Transformers and that was a mistake.

It's easy to be distracted by Fox given she was sexualized from the very beginning, but both she and Amanda Seyfried are absolutely excellent in this.

There's something deeper going on within story which I'm not going to even try to analyze or express. If someone wants to start a discussion around this in the comments I'll try to contribute some of my thoughts.

So for now I'll play it safe and give a shoutout to the soundtrack. There were so many good songs on here including:

* Kiss with a Fist (Florence + The Machine)
* Death (White Lies)
* Violet (Hole) in an incredible credits scene.

And that KISS! I can't remember a more erotic kiss, gay or heterosexual, in the thousands of movies I've seen.

There are so many interesting things going on in this horror-comedy that elevate Jennifer's Body rom just being another teenage splatter fest.
