This book is edited by two literature professors, a queer man and a radical feminist, who were both raised by lesbians: definitely not the average writers for a book with counter-arguments to same-sex marriage. It contains many personal stories of people who are in some way collateral damages of same-sex marriage rights and who are usually forgotten when discussing the issue.

The sections are:
I.: Children
II.: Women
III. Society
IV.: Globe
V.: Gays
VI.: Bards

This book is neither for or against "same-sex marriage" but instead illuminates the often neglected or obfuscated impacts of homosexual adoption and SSM on the human rights of children. It is personal and simultaneously scholarly in its presentation and substantiation. You must read this book if raised as the child of a homosexual or transgender parent in the 1970/80s. It also confronts the ethical choice facing Baby Echo of whether the adult sexual technology revolution should continue to trump the natural human rights of children.

I've been following Robert Oscar Lopez and the rest of the contributors to English Manif (englishmanif.blogspot.com) ever since the appearance of Lopez' groundbreaking essay "Growing up with Two Moms: The Untold Children's View" (www.thepublicdiscourse.com/2012/08/6065/), which introduced the counter-PC notion that, no, *not* all children of gay parents are glad they grew up in a gay household, and consequently *not* all children of gay parents are supportive of gay marriage. Rather, there are children of gay parents who firmly believe that gay parenting is a violation of a fundamental human right to have one's biological mother and father in one's life if at all possible. That human right also conflicts with the widely-accepted (or at least ignored) practices of adoption, surrogacy, in-vitro fertilization, and gamete (sperm or egg) donation. (Note: While most of the contributors are not Catholic, opposition to all these practices except adoption is in line with Catholic teaching.) While the book does not claim to oppose gay marriage, the assumption that gay marriage will lead to gay parenting, combined with the belief that gay parenting is ultimately harmful to children, makes the book at least an implicit polemic against gay marriage -- especially when you consider the timing of its publication, since the Supreme Court is set to rule on an important gay marriage case.

The book starts off with its strongest section, asking, "What is the impact of gay parenting on children?" and proceeds to answer mostly in the negative. However, there are a couple of caveats that become readily clear.

I honestly appreciate knowing there are still people literate enough to use the Jephthah story as a metaphor. I also appreciate the bravery required to "come out" against the politically correct mobs who do not want to hear the stories of these children who paid the price for their parents' unwillingness to give them what they needed--their biological heritage, their father, their mother. In this century, our buying and selling of eggs, sperm, wombs, and children is slavery. Finally, the slaves are breaking free and telling their stories.

Anyone striving to develop an intelligent, compassionate opinion on gay marriage should read these thoughtful essays and memoires by adult children raised by same-sex couples. So should adoption professionals, members of the clergy, family counselors and social workers. These truths need to be known and promulgated.

After completing an inspectional reading of the book, it's become very clear to me that this is an invaluable and illuminating resource, and perhaps even the most authoritative resource one can possess on the subject today. Everything is thoroughly researched and masterfully organized. The book not only provides stories that move one to understand with unstoppable force, but also goes into a good deal of the politics of it all.

This book is a thought provoking eye-opener. It consists of 50 chapters of varying lengths by different authors. It is like a compact encyclopedia of mostly excellent writing and thinking. Many of the viewpoints contained in this book have not been represented in the current debate about redefining marriage, and need to be heard by everyone. I don't know the authors, but would like to say to them: God bless you guys for your courage, honesty, and concern for children. Thanks for putting so much thought and effort into bringing your experiences to light.
