Jerry Maguire is a likeable man in an industry of superficial phonies. As agent to a stable of elite athletes, he plays the insincerity game better than anyone, that is until a deeply suppressed conscience can no longer be ignored. A touchy-feely 25-page mission statement is the result, and this radical piece of honesty seems his undoing. In quick succession Jerry loses his job, all of his clients (save one) and his high-maintenance fiancée.
The story's most admirable character is Rod Tidwell, wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals. Flawed as we all are, in this case burdened with an inflated ego regarding his on-field talents, Rod is a rare human being: unswervingly true to his wife and the people he calls "friend." It's the brotherly love of Rod that helps Jerry grow as a man, and the devoted husband that he obviously is that shows Jerry a truth he hasn't yet realized: that he is capable of loving another person more than himself.
Two quotes from Jerry's sports agent mentor, Dicky Fox best sum up this story:
Dicky Fox: "If this [points to heart] is empty, this [points to head] doesn't matter."
and, in the film's final lines:
Dicky Fox: "Hey, I don't have all the answers. In life, to be honest, I failed as much as I have succeeded. But I love my wife. I love my life. And I wish you MY kind of success."

(7.2) Jerry Maguire (1996) - Tom Cruise/Cuba Gooding Jr./Renée Zellweger/Kelly Preston/Jay Mohr/Bonnie Hunt/Jonathan Lipnicki/Glenn Frey/Donal Logue/Beau Bridges (cameos: Al Michaels/Dan Dierdorf/Frank Gifford/Drew Bledsoe/Katarina Witt/Mel Kiper/Drew Rosenhaus/Art Monk/Richie Kotite/Troy Aikman/Warren Moon/Kerry Collins/Dallas Malloy)
Tom Cruise in this film is a over-worked sports manager who has lost sight of what is important... after one of the players he is representing winds up the hospital the players kid asks him"Don't you think you should ask him to stop it's his forth concution." Jerry quickly blows off the kid by saying "no one can stop your dad" and gets back to talking on his cell-phone. The kid then, gives him the finger and walks off. This a life changing event for Jerry for he realizes he has turned into someone he no longer wants to be. He then writes "The Things We Were Afraid To Say Aloud" memo to his co-workers about how they should be representing there players. Jerry then gets sacked from his job and loses all of his players except the loyal Cuba Gooding Jr.- Rod Tillwell who stays with him through and through. Jerry then leaves his job with Renee Zwelleger a single-mom, who was inspired by Jerry's memo. They form there own branch of representation and secretly Renee gets attracted to Jerry especially since Jerry loves her son so much. Only problem Jerry can't commit despite the fact he married(just so he could be dad to her son). I won't give away the ending, but this is what a romantic comedy should be not over the top and funny.
Finally a romantic comedy that really is a comedy-
One of my favorite lines is "After two bottles of wine and a bad pizza I suddely grew a conscience."
Or the hilliarous "Show me the money!" scene
Or Jerry's major blow-up as he leaves the office. Those scenes still make me laugh each time I watch them.
The actors are what made this movie deserve high stars. Cuba got a well-deserved Oscar for his hilliarous yet thoughtful character. And Tom Cruise as most times is fabulous as Jerry McGuire he really made this whole movie.I find myself falling in love with him each time I see this movie... and in this one girls you see that wonderful cocky sweetness he brings to the screen. And the little boy in this is nothing short of precious.

First of all (confession), I love almost all Tom Cruise does in his movies. This movie is a great one, too, in terms of his character.
Lots of good and interesting characters in this movie: Renée Zellweger, Bonnie Hunt, Renée’s son, Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Jay Moor.
This is a good story line, too. I usually hate sports movies, even though I was a college athlete. This is usually because they show the sports stuff, and actors look to be below high-school-level competing in sports. If you're a musician, it’s like seeing an actor “playing an instrument” in a movie. They don’t even move their fingers (or bows) at the right times! Sports’ action is staged, and not filmed well. This movie does a good job with the limited number of actual sports scenes it shows. It’s much more real, and some may be.
I think this is top two in sports movies for me, because though it’s related to sports [Jerry Maguire is a sports agent for Cuba’s character (who’s an NFL wide receiver)], it’s really about Jerry Maguire and Renee’s character, Dorothy. The sports stuff is just in the background. That means it’s not an underdog-sports movie with a big victory scene in the end, like most sports movies. It’s really, in contrast, a movie about a man who develops as a person. The character, Jerry, develops through the movie as a person. And that’s satisfying. In this sense, it’s like Tom Cruise’s role in Rainman. You get to see his character develop and change over the course of the movie.
