I absolutely love Frankie Valli (and of course the Four Seasons), so I was thrilled when I first heard they were making a movie based on the Broadway play. This film is wonderful, and I've already watched it about 10 times.
A few highlights:
- You just know anything to do with Clint Eastwood is going to be outstanding. That's a gimme in advance, because the guy doesn't settle for anything less. He's no doubt one of the very best actors, directors, and producers of all time.
- The finest acting performances are definitely from Vincent Piazza and Christopher Walken. The latter makes for the perfect mob boss, in many other movies as well. Both of them should be up for Best Actor Oscars for this one.
- I have to laugh at negative remarks I've read about John Lloyd Young's voice. In my opinion it's truly excellent, and as close to Frankie as you're ever going to get. If you listen to Young's vocals for "Sherry" on the soundtrack CD, I think it would be nearly impossible to distinguish them from Valli's version on the same album, if it wasn't for the fact that Frankie sings his acapella.
- The storyline itself is great. Never a dull moment, and I also discovered many new things about the band I didn't know in the process. I'm well aware it wasn't a completely accurate blow-by-blow of their life stories, but that likely would have made the film 4 hours long... Although, I'm not sure I would have minded that at all either!
Bottom line, 5 stars all the way... Absolutely excellent job by all involved.
A few technical notes:
- The Bluray package I received was obviously intended for Europe since it was rated by the "Irish Film Classification Office", and all URLs on the box point to web sites in the UK. Thankfully, the Bluray disc itself is region-free (as almost all are nowadays), as advertised in the "Product Details". It works perfectly in my USA Bluray player, and looks great in 1080P. The audio is DTS-HD 5.1, and sounds awesome. Subtitles are of course also available in English, along with 11 other languages.
- Some advice to those in the USA or Canada that bought the DVD version of this film and received a Region 2 or PAL disc: Always check the DVD box (or in this case, "Product Details"), as they clearly list the Region code and format. You'll always want a Region code of "0" (region free) or "1" (USA and Canada), and NTSC format (*not* PAL). Otherwise, as you've sadly discovered it won't work in your player. But, that's certainly no reason to give this product a low rating, you've simply bought the wrong format DVD for your country.
