You get to meet Jessie Kasper. He loses his brother and mother to cancer in a short period of time. He has issues dealing with this. We read about his struggle to become normal again and not have irrational fears about being sick. It was touching and heartbreaking to read his struggle. I have never had a issue with anxiety but I feel like I have a little bit of a better understanding. He is a senior in high school who has a great best friend. Duke was hilarious. I could listen to that guy talk all day. A girl moves into town named Kacey. She is dark, mysterious and beautiful. She and Jessie fall in love and begin a romance. I'm not going to say too much because I want your jaw to drop at the ending as well. My favorite line which made me laugh so hard was from Duke. "Have you ever played Grand Theft Auto so long that your initial reaction when you see bystanders is to plow through them in your car?"
Overall I loved it was completely impressed. It is fast paced, dark, uncomfortable, funny and well paced. I loved it. I look forward to reading the next book in this series because I'm dying to know what happens.
Jessie's life takes a turn for the worst when his mother, and brother suffer untimely death's due to cancer. Like any one who has lost someone they love, Jessie has no idea what he will do without them. His intense, sophistic fear of his loved ones leaving him to deal with the nature of the world forces him to lash out on his own body, thinking he is sick. Jessie reaches an extreme low in his life, and it's unclear that he will recover. If it were not for his friends, and family, Jessie would surely dwindle to nothingness.
When a girl named Kacey comes to town, she captivates Jessie, and the two fall in love. Their strong, and promising relationship blossoms, and the pair are inseparable. We find that the characters have a good deal in common, and really seem to get each other. There are so many elements that bring this novel to be on my favorites list. My emotions were stirred by this unbelievably enticing, and addictive book. I'm sure I cried out enough tears to fill a bucket! 5 stars all around!
Jessie Kasper has lost his brother, and his mother to a horrible disease. He now has an irrational fear of getting the same thing. While in the beginning you find yourself thinking 'what in the world is wrong with this kid?' you quickly sympathize.
His best friend Duke is hilarious. The kind of best friend I think every has in high school, and they're the friend of a lifetime.
Jessie develops a relationship with Kacey. He is so unsure of himself he's unable to see why she would want to be with him, but Kacey has some issues of her own.
This is a book that you read and think, 'this should be a movie.' This book will stick with me for a long time to come.
I am beyond ready to get into book two in this series. This was a book that you could read, finish, and not understand how you managed to read the entire thing so quickly.
10 stars if I could Mr. Nave. You have a gift.
The main character, Jessie Kasper, is intense . But he's also so genuine and likable, I found myself loving his character. After losing both his mother and brother to cancer, Jessie develops an irrational fear that he's sick. He even goes so far as to hurt himself, trying to examine or remove "afflicted" areas. The amazing thing is that despite the trauma and loss, he has an incredible support system. The dynamic between father and son was so incredible, and I just loved their little two-person family. The two of them were stronger than families of five!
In addition to his dad, Jessie has his hilarious best friend Duke and Duke's girlfriend, Lily. Not only are they funny, but they really truly love Jessie and watch his back. But then Kacey Monroe comes to town, and she just happens to be Jessie's therapist's niece. Can we say awkward?!
He and Kacey have both experienced loss, and together they will try to pick up some of the broken pieces. Although in reality they aren't broken, but simply fractured.
Superb writing, unforgettable characters, and a story that will have you laughing one minute and crying the next. 5 stellar stars.
Here are two of my favorite quotes I marked:
"...some of the most beautiful things on this earth are also the most toxic."
"We're not broken...but we can fracture. Everyone can, and everyone does in their own way."
