This sweet trek is melancholy and magic, unexplainable and intriguing, delightful Nd heartbreaking all at once. Bunker once again proves that he is not only a master of words, but a keen student of the human condition... and a hopeless romantic.
So step up, child. Purchase the ticket and settle in for a good time. Oh, and if you cry a little... well then, that's okay, sometimes the things behind the door change us.
In this wonderful tale of a lonely widower, passing the days since his wife died with micro home improvement projects, a closet renovation turns him into an accidental time traveler. He opens a door to the past while simultaneously opening up to new love. Then on a whim he seeks to correct one of his life's injustices. Setting aside thoughts of paradox and what-ifs, he plummets through the decades. But is the past really what he's searching for?
It seems that over the years, the definition of a 'romance' has morphed. What used to be called erotica or porn is now called romance. It's refreshing to read a real romance, especially in the time travel or historic genre. Jessup's Door is definitely a real romance; it's not filled with the garbage (high-octane sex, f-bombs every other word, slangy and informal prose, sleazy characters, lack of any sort of storyline, second grade level writing, etc) that plagues most 'romance' these days. A sweet story that warms the heart. Kudos. Five Stars.
Addendum: Mr. Bunker, if you are selling doors, I want one. Even if it's a one-way door. I was born one hundred fifty years too late. Such a door could rectify that situation.
When finished, Dora encouraged him to walk through the newly installed door. As he reached for the light, he found himself in a small train station in the old West! He quickly exited back to his bedroom! Startled, Dora asked what he had seen. So they talked about it. First step was to get coins from 1870 and some old clothing from that period. Then they made a plan, and both stepped through the door to Jessup, Texas.
This book is wonderful! The characters are likeable and well presented. The description is perfect, painting a vivid picture of what is going on in the story. The reader of the audiobook version that I listened to did a wonderful job and the whole thing was totally engaging. I am definitely a fan of this author! Well done!
