By Mr. D. P. Jay on April 24, 2015
Format: Hardcover
It is interesting to see how I have changed. Many years ago I would be cheering everything that Cupitt says in this book but my reaction now is to suggest, cynically, that Cupitt should be so lucky to possess key insights which show how wrong the Christian Church has been for two thousand years. He tells the story, in simple language, of the development of Christology, suggesting that Greek influences corrupted the pure message of Jesus and made him into a god, and he asks us to go further than the protestant reformation did and to purify the Church. Most 'ordinary people' would not have a clue what he is on about it and his version of Christianity can only be accepted by a few very austere and highly-educated people. The Jesus whose appeal was primarily to simple fishermen and prostitutes does not appear in Cupitt's book. His view of Christianity is as culturally conditioned as the views he discredits; the typical fault of the reductionism is that he is unable to see that his views are disqualified by the same principle of relativism as those he uses to disqualify other views.

He rightly argues that the titles used of Jesus were expressions of pluralist thought, and James Dunn's work on Christology shows how that is sc. he warns us that we too easily read back the Chalcedonian Definition into New Testament titles of Jesus but he assumes this to be a bad thing. Surely, the early Fathers represent a development in Christian thinking but their ideas must have developed from the ideas of those who went before them and from the scriptures. Of course, their thought was conditioned by the philosophy and culture of their own day and by 'mental patters' (like Jungian archetypes) that belong to human nature. But so what?
