Editorial Reviews

Review

This book makes the Word of God accessible to the young and, in fact, to anyone who wishes to look at the Bible with the eyes of a faith in touch with the grace of the Jewish people. The insights are quite valuable, but the real attractiveness of the book is the faith that it inspires through a simple, straightforward and imaginative reading of the Sacred Text. --Fr. Francis Martin, John Paul II Cultural Center, Washington, D.C.

Finally a book I can read in a short time that easily explains how/where/why Jesus Christ Our Savior is foreshadowed in the Old Testament, which has always been a puzzle for me. Thank you R. Veras!

Fr. Veras is a priest in the Archdiocese of New York who teaches high school religion. In this book, as in his classroom, he teaches Scripture by linking the Old and New Testaments as a way of acknowledging the presence of Christ "here and now in his mystical body, the Church." In Jesus of Israel, he applies this integrated approach to stories ranging from creation to the annunciation.

Addressing God's covenant with Abraham and his promise to Sarah, Veras draws our attention to the aged Sarah's laughing--to herself--when she hears that she will bear a son. God asks her why she laughed, she denies it, and God calls her on the both the lie and her doubts. "This one verse is perhaps the most important and revelatory in the Old Testament," Veras writes, signaling a God who is unlike the deity people had imagined. " Sarah's laughter is for everyone," he explains, "because Sarah has discovered that God fulfills his promise even when we are not worthy."

In Chapter 7, he reveals that the "most joyful" part of his Old Testament course is the story of Joseph (Genesis 37, 39-45) in which students are required to find parallels to the story of Jesus. Veras offers several examples, challenging readers to find their own and admitting that even though he has taught this material before, he still learns something new on his own or from his students every time. This, as the other 11 chapters, ends with reflection questions. Here they deal with people in our own lives through whom the resurrected Christ reveals himself, God's bringing good out of evil, and giving and receiving mercy.

Fr. Veras has written a book that is at once deeply spiritual, thought provoking, and fascinating.

This is simple to read and understand….In the past, God in the Old Testament was only God The Father.[ in my understanding] Fr. Veras demonstrates that this is also the Second Person of Trinity….He demonstrates how the new is hidden in the Old and the Old is revealed in the new..one of the best tom O

This book is not just about "finding Christ in the Old Testament", it is about finding Christ at all, today, in our technical and scientific society where God supposedly has no more room or need to exist. More than everything that life can give us today, there is the need for happiness and significance to life. Without a proper answer to those needs, that only God can provide, our life remains senseless, a puzzle with all the pieces scattered. Christ, in person, alive, today, can be found by reading this book. Don't believe ? Just read it.

I had hoped for a few more bits of evidence but I did enjoy reading this. One thing that was very distracting is that while you can sense Father Veras' passion in his writing, the number of exclamation marks in this text were way overdone. It got to be a joke for me reading it because I found myself "exclaiming" in my head when I was reading this. That's not good. The editors should have red lined the !!!!!!!.

I purchased this book because I thought it would be a survey of prefigurements of Jesus in the Old Testament. While it certainly does talk about some of the types of Christ in the Old Testament (as found in Adam, Abraham, Isaac, Joseph, Moses, David, Elijah, and Elisha who get the most treatment), I found this to be much more useful for contemplation rather than as a theological or historical text (it is accessible to any interested reader in high school or older). The two or three reflection questions at the end of each chapter emphasize application to the reader's life today. Since it was not what I expected, I was tempted to put it down more than once early on. I'm glad I did not. Some of the insights the author provides are thought provoking and the typology he proposes is not always obvious but it is often profound (e.g., the baker and cupbearer in the Joseph story in light of Jesus on the cross and Elijah and Elisha as Christ and the disciples at the Ascension). Along the way, a short but comprehensive overview of the history of the Chosen People is provided. Short chapters allow this book to be dipped into when one has a few minutes here or there, but one could spend hours contemplating the depths of Scripture as presented here.

This is a good book, and you can judge it by its cover, which is an artists portrayal of the face of Jesus, appearing to be unvieled for the first time. This is a must read for anyone who is searching for God. It is a relatively short book, 130 pages, that touches on mostly all of the Old Testament and shows how Jesus was in the Jews story long before he made his appearance in Bethlehem. The author manages to stick to the task at hand, but is also not afraid to vear off into other related topics. I started reading this book in the store, then at a hockey game, inbetween whistles, took a break to play some ping pong and eat dinner, continued reading it till I fell asleep and then finished it when I woke up. It was an awesome book, and I usually don't like to read. This book is for anyone who believes in the God of the Old Testament!
