In the interests of full disclosure, let me reveal that I had the privilege of reading the manuscript of this book several years ago as a theological consultant to Zondervan, the publisher. I did not know, however, of the fulsome thanks to my husband Tim in the acknowledgments until I received my review copy a few days ago. Sally Lloyd-Jones, a Redeemer member for many years, has done a wondrous thing. She has captured the plot line of redemption in a children's story Bible that sings the praise of Jesus and his saving grace on every page, in every story. Most children's books of Bible stories are little more than a Christianized version of Aesop's fables, or at best, a Christian adventure cartoon. But Sally goes out of her way in the first pages of the book to reclaim the true story of the Bible: not a book of rules, nor a book of heroes, but: “The Bible is most of all a Story…It's like the most wonderful of fairy tales that has come true in real life! You see, the best thing about this Story is--it's true! There are lots of stories in the Bible, but all the stories are telling one Big Story. The Story of how God loves his children and comes to rescue them.” This is heady theology, often missed in adult preaching and teaching, but fully realized in an age appropriate and attractive form that will delight children and often (at least for me) leave the grown up reader in tears. More wondrously, she has avoided the moralism and legalism that so often characterizes Christian educational materials for children. For five years I worked as an editor of children's curriculum, requiring me to review, edit, and sometimes write Sunday school material for children. About the Author

Sally Lloyd-Jones is an award-winning New York Times bestselling writer of over 30 books for children. Her books are written for children (although a lot of adults are reading them, too) and include: The Jesus Storybook Bible, an ALA Notable and winner of the Platinum Book Award; Thoughts to Make Your Heart Sing, winner of the Association of Christian Publisher’s Adult Devotional Book of the year; and the Christopher Medal winner, Baby Wren and the Great Gift. Chapter One

"Hello Birds!" God said. And with a fluttering and flapping and chirping and singing, birds filled the skies. "Hello Fish!" God said. And with a darting and dashing and wriggling and splashing, fish filled the seas! "You're good," God said. And they were.

Then God said, "Hello Animals!" And everyone came out to play. The earth was filled with noisy noises - growling and gobbling and snapping and snorting and happy skerfuffling. "You're good," God said. And they were.

God saw all that he had made and he loved them. And they were lovely because he loved them.

But God saved the best for last. From the beginning God had a shining dream in his heart. He would make people to share his forever happiness. They would be his children and the world would be their perfect home.

So God breathed life into Adam and Eve.

When they opened their eyes, the first thing they ever saw was God's face. He whispered their names to them and taught them who they were.

And when God saw them he was like a new dad. "You look like me," he said. "You're the most beautiful thing I've ever made!"

God loved them with all of his heart. And they were lovely because he loved them.

And Adam and Eve joined in the Song of the stars and the streams and the wind in the trees, the wonderful Song of love to the one who made them. Their hearts were filled with happiness. And nothing ever made them sad or lonely or sick or afraid.

God looked at everything he had made. "Perfect!" he said. And it was.

But all the stars and the mountains and oceans and galaxies and everything were nothing compared to how much God loved his children. He would move Heaven and Earth to be near them. Always. Whatever happened, whatever it cost him, he would always love them.

And so it was that the wonderful love story began ...

First of, it's theologically accurate and recommended by many theologians. Every time I read it with my boys (5 and 3 year old) they don't move or even blink because they're so interested. The wording is so easy going, fun, yet touching. Literally every story makes them think and honestly, makes me think too! It truly highlights the main point of Jesus dying on the cross and His love for us. If you buy one bible story book for your kiddos, let it be this one. You won't regret it. It doesn't have every popular bible story, but does an amazing job at laying the foundation. The illustrations could have been better in my opinion, but honestly, the text is so good that the pictures are not even that big of a deal to me. So grateful for this book.
