Tell me the truth, don't you think it's just rubbing our collective coach noses in it when we have to do the boarding tromp back to economy right through the first class/business class section? There are all those folks with free upgrades or who've paid extra, smugly settled into their cushy seats, legs stretched out and enjoying a before-flight drink. On a Lufthansa flight to Europe (13 hours in one leg!), I even saw vases with red rosebuds on their seat tables...
I can live with lesser gourmet foods (pretzels, anyone?), a few polite tussles over remaining overhead space and even the leg space which is perfectly fine if you're under 4'11". What I have a tough time with though, are the relaxing arrangements. My coach seat may recline a bit (or is the recline on my seat simply my imagination while the recline on the passenger ahead of me seems like something I'd seen on a LaZBoy chair?) but I am perennially unable to sleep on a plane. Even with wine. Or homeopathic remedies. Or tricking my brain by resetting my internal clock the day before the flight. Simply put, I don't sleep on a plane.
Until I got a JetComfy Pillow.
At this point (July 2016), if you're looking at the JetComfy, you're likely seeing a lot of non-Amazon purchasers writing reviews. That's because the product didn't ship officially until early last month. However I've flown with this device on three round trips at this point (longest so far is 5.5 hours) and I'm more than pleased to report that I slept. As in, my eyes were shut, my brain was totally turned off and I was surprised to awaken and see the flight attendants doing the final aisle walk to collect flight trash. And all done without chemical/alcohol assistance.
The device mounts easily around the seat’s armrest. It’s worked for me on aisle, middle and window seats. It would *not* work on an armrest that isn’t “open” on the bottom as you might find in the bulkhead. It takes just a few square inches of space on the armrest and, once affixed, is solidly in place. While it does take a bit of the armrest space you might be sharing with a seatmate, once it’s in place you don’t “need” the armrest any longer and you can relinquish the rest of it. When seated beside total strangers (as opposed to the partial stranger type), I found they were at first curious, next a bit concerned that I’d be intruding in their space and then totally fine with it when they realized the JetComfy meant I would definitely not be intruding in that space because I was now well-positioned in my own seat, head and neck at rest and in no danger of falling over sideways on to them. But, frankly, I’ve never “let myself go” that much on a flight to impinge on their space; I used to just sit, wide-eyed, stiff and unbending in my seat and worry about sleeping…
That said, my favorite seat for using my JetComfy is a window seat with the JetComfy on the armrest close to the plane’s “wall.” I just lean in to the pillow and I’m relaxed.
I have used four other brands and types of travel pillows. These included the Travelrest - Ultimate Travel Pillow - Lean Into It & Sleep - #1 Best Seller - Ergonomic Neck Pillow - Airplanes, Cars, Buses, Trains, Office Napping, Camping, Wheelchairs & Home (Ranked #1 by WSJ); a more-typical travel pillow Lewis N. Clark Adjustable On Air Neck Pillow, Blue; a ThermaRest compressible pillow and Brookstone 666115 Memory Foam Travel Pillow that inflated and had memory foam.
I think the JetComfy works the best because instead of “carrying” my head/neck weight on my own body via a “wraparound” pillow style which relies upon my own body to brace it, the JetComfy transfers that weight to the seat’s armrest, meaning I’m much more relaxed. The “arm” of the JetComfy has some flexibility built in, too, so it gives a slight cushion as the jet flies along (and I now snooze).
While I wish the JetComfy was a little less “bulky” for carrying (I attach it to my Tumi backpack and carry it outside the pack), it does the job better than any of the other pillows I’ve tried so functionality is more important to me than a smaller product. The pen/light/stylus proved useful on a flight when I had to complete a required inspection form; I didn’t have to grab for my flight goodies pack to find a pen to fill out the form. I haven’t used the battery pack yet—my iPad/iPhone have stayed well-powered throughout my flights so the need wasn’t there.
I will not fly a long trip without my JetComfy now. Heck, I suggested to the company that they should test these out at nursing homes/SNFs/convalescent hospitals where patients must spend lots of time in a wheelchair and sometimes nod off, their heads bobbing lower to their chest. I think a JetComfy would make life much better for these folks!
I used it in a small plane, a midsize plane, and in the airport terminal seats. Each flight was less than 3 hours so I can't speak to long-term comfort. If it doesn't hold up after our upcoming 10+ hour flight, I'll update my review.
Update: it worked GREAT for our overseas trip!! My husband HATES flying and can never sleep on a plane but even he said the jet comfy made all the difference. He was able to sleep enough that we staved off jet lag and travel exhaustion, making the first leg of our trip much more enjoyable than previous trips. Hurray!
So I was excited to try this... until my 2 young kids lifted up all the arm rests and sprawled all over me and our 3 seats so they could sleep.
Desperate to to sleep myself, I tried just wedging the arm of this pillow into the seat-- it worked GREAT! I wedged the arm into the sleep so I could rest sideways, wedged it into the seat between my legs so I could rest leaning forward... my weight kept the pillow stable and I completely knocked out in multiple positions without ever attaching this to an arm rest. Could only do this if you were sitting next to people you know... but it worked!
As others said only con is it is a bit bulky.. but I don't see a way around the size it is as small as it can be without losing function. Possibly they could create a blow up pillow portion to reduce size.
The only con is it isn't compact, bit it is totally worth making room in your bag!!!
