Hawaiian Crosswinds
Torn between family loyalties, political ambition, and their commitment to each other, Rafe and Eden must fight to protect the place they care about so deeply.
The year is 1892 and the small island nation of Hawaii is in turmoil. Rafe Easton and a small but influential band of patriots are quietly pursuing annexation to the United States out of concerns that the monarchy will fall to a less noble power. But Rafe is not the only one with secrets. And as political tensions mount, some of the island’s most prominent families are faced with revelations that could unravel everything—the future of the country--and Rafe’s future with his beautiful fiancé, Eden Derrington.
Just as the enemy of righteousness stalks his prey, danger prowls Hawaii’s beaches and pineapple plantations. The man who murdered Rafe’s father now threatens his mother and adopted son. And Eden is compelled to join her father in the noble yet dangerous work of medical research among a shunned leper community—a community that shelters the mother she never knew.
Among all the turmoil, will their own love survive?

From the Back Cover
The wedding’s abandoned, and the clouds of political disaster loom overhead.
The fire that almost ended Eden’s life has put an end to the promise of marriage. While saving Eden, Rafe lost not only his eyesight, but also his independence, his determination, and his pride. In a short letter, he ends Eden’s hope for happiness. Hurt and angry, Eden sails to the leper colony on the island of Molokai where her mother is suffering.
During Eden’s year-long absence, Rafe seeks medical care in San Francisco and eventually regains his sight. Returning to his coffee plantation on the Big Island, Rafe finds the beautiful Bernice Judson waiting.
This is the year of decision. Hawaii is on the brink of revolution. The anti-Royalists threaten to depose the Hawaiian queen and bring the Hawaiian Islands under the Stars and Stripes. Eden must choose a side in politics and where to put her trust.
Will Eden discover the painful lesson God wants her to learn? And will she ever find healing for her broken heart with or without a life that includes Rafe?

But I've lived in Hawai`i for some while now, and I've made it a point to learn the history, language, and culture. Having said that, I can't help but think Ms. Chaikin doesn't get it, and the book comes off as somewhat disrespectful to native Hawaiians. To say that Lili`uokalani didn't have an independent right to rule the kingdom, because everything comes from the G-d of Christians? To give thanks for the success of the overthrow and annexation?
The January 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy and the subsequent takeover by the United States stands forever as a shameful deed, and any study of history makes it impossible to see in any other light. But the G-d of Christians blesses this?
It's a good novel as novels go, and there's always room for disagreement. But I think wrapping such a controversial political event in the mantle of divine approval is a bit too much.
The back page confused me at first, as it seemed to be at odds with the ending of the previous story. As I got further into the pages I realised how it fit into place and I was utterly engrossed. Yes, Eden gets to Molokai. Yes, Rafe gets around town with Bunny. Yes, there is always heartbreak. Yes, terrible things happen. No, you won't be disappointed.
Linda's style is at its best and I really hope she gives us a few more offerings before calling it a day. I love that she is so merciless sometimes with her characters. New fans will appreciate the depth in this series as much as the die hard LLC fans. You can't race through this one - it must be absorbed without interruption. There's gold everywhere to be found. And do yourself a favour - get hold of the first novel if you can, "For Whom The Stars Shine", as there are actually four books in this series and it acts as prequel. It is SUCH a pleasure to read them all from the start, and I'm looking forward to doing it all over again very soon.
was written in 2003, but have not found it yet. I hope she continues writing the continued stories. The book I purchased was
new and very nice. This product gets a 5 star rate from me.
