Mudder Watch Repair Tool Back Case Holder to prevent hand injuries and keep the watch still. This set up worked extremely well for me. Took just a few tries and backs came right off. However, this tool would not open a very small oval watch. I dont know if the shape really had anything to do with it or not. None of these watches have that notch where a watch knife would go. So overall very happy with this purchase and would recommend.
I also bought PIXNOR Watch Opener Tool Case Opener Pry Type which did open the back of the oval shaped watch.
Unfortunately, by default, the spring tension for the "pop" action is VERY HIGH and can DESTROY YOUR WATCH! This high spring tension combined with long tip travel (.5 inch?) before it "pops" is a recipe for disaster. While it worked fine on one of my watches, I destroyed a $1200 ladies Movado with this tool. Because the spring loaded "pop" action was so strong, after the back popped off, the blade slid through the inside of the watch, snapping the battery clip completely off and then destroying the actuator coil (see photo). The watch is ruined and the mechanism will need to be replaced.
Learn from my mistake!
AFTER ruining my wife's watch, I realized the big red plastic knob is the spring tension adjustment. BEFORE trying this tool, UNSCREW THE RED PLASTIC KNOB as far back as it will go without coming off. This reduces the spring tension. Then give it a couple tries. If it doesn't work, tighten the knob a few turns and try again. If the tension gets to the point where you're worried about being able to control it, STOP!!! and try something else (like visiting a local jeweler). Take it from me, it is better to be SAFE than SORRY!
Works exactly like the spring loaded center punches often used to break car windows. Can take several attempts but has, so far, opened every cheap watch case I've used it on. Too bad there isn't a cheap tool to press these backs on- they are a nuisance to replace, also.
A more permanent and better solution is to buy a solar powered Citizen or Seiko and forget battery changes permanently.
