This is a book I'd heard about for years but could never find in print. The transfer to Kindle format is rough with no chapter divisions, random number that might have been footnotes in the original, and no format to the tables. It is readable.
As for the contents, it is interesting to compare it to Weber's much more famous work. Weber and Sombart were contemporaries and Sombart mentions Weber's thesis, making the point that the Puritans of the Calvinistic Reformation shared some characteristics with the Jews in their biblical interpretations. Sombart presents a good deal of material from the Torah and the Talmud showing that Jewish history uniquely fitted the people for a capitalist society. He also examines some of the historical evidence like the expulsions of Jews from Spain in 1492 leading to the economic priority of Amsterdam and other cities to which they fled.
Because of the allegation of involvement with national socialism, Sombart is often portrayed as an anti-Semite. I did not find this to be the case. He may not have cared much for modern capitalism but is even restrained in expressing that view. In any case, this is an important work and I'm happy to see it in an inexpensive Kindle format.

Sombart's (author) complaints about Jews could equally be directed toward non-Jews.

Sombart's (author) complaints about Jews could equally be directed toward non-Jews. The author lies by omission. The author acts as if gentiles have been perfect, innocent, angels in history (what about the slaughter of millions of Native Americans at the hands of protestants). He also ignores the fact that most of the robber-barons of the guilded era were protestants. Further, Capitalism had already been in place in Netherlands before the Jews emigrated to this region. Most of Sombart's statements in the later chapters of his book are merely his opinions; not backed up by any evidence. In the earlier part of his book, he ignores the fact that gentiles played a key role in the business of slave trading. Sombart's book is very biased. However, it does give a good view into the mind of an antisemite.

I highly enjoyed this book, and would recommend anyone interested in the subjects of :History, Economics, and or the Jewish Question, read this book.
It is well sourced. Werner makes his case by citing numerous sources from the past, especially from the mid-evil era till his era in the 20th century. His over-all thesis is : Jews had a very large influence on what is called 'modern capitalism'. He dissects Jewish religion, and Jewish character traits and ties them into explanation for the disproportionate Jewish economic gain in the gentile lands.
There is no "jew hatred" in this book, but there is 'antisemitism'. Antisemitism in the sense that 'antisemitism' is simply a reaction to 'semitism' (Jewish behavior, beliefs, and actions). He does not write as a person vilifying Jews, but rather as a scientist using the scientific method to explain a phenomena.

Why Germans hated and extarminated Jews with such vigour and scientific belief? Read this book to find out!
Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2014Verified Purchase
It is really amazing that Werner Sombart, well known German scholar, one of the best researchers of his time, has written and published this work. To modern reader it is completly unconvincing. Its basic hypothesis is that the Jews have contributed in making modern capitalism with all the best vices they could have employed on their task to ruin Christian competition and won the total control of market. But when it comes to the evidence this book colapses.
It simply reinforces its hypothesis with other hypothesis or statistical data so obscure and irrelevant that you are really hit by a feeling that this work is the Nazi anti-Jewish Bible in scientific form.
The rise of Nazism has a whole different perspective when you read this book! Contemporary of Max Weber, his coleague and respected professor has written most systematic sum-up of anti-jewish predjudice I could have imagined in 1911, 20 years before the Nazis came to power!
