Jews without mercy: A lament Hardcover – January 1, 1982

5.0 out of 5 stars 1

No one speaks for the Jews. .We are the people of the great fraction; the whole of us must always be described as the number of Jews divided by the number of Jews. Even Moses was permitted no role greater than that of messenger. We are a nation by belief, by ethics, and by history. We are difficult to lead, impossible to collect, a tribe of individuals, a brotherhood of critics. From time to time in our history men and women have come forward, claiming to speak as Jews for Jews. The temptation to proclaim oneself king or prophet in a nation of equals before God is enormous, for God does not seem to answer many prayers. Jews are not likely to turn away the self-proclaimed king or prophet without a hearing, for the life of a Jew offers little ease: History holds little promise, heaven remains in dispute; we are not hostages to fortune but to ethics. As each new challenge to our ethical existence arises, a chorus of Jewish voices answers. The current challenge comes from within the ranks of Jews. A group of men and women, claiming to be both Jews and neoconservatives, now proposes that Jews accept a new ethical definition of themselves, a definition contrary to much, perhaps most, of what has defined us since our historical beginning in the desert after we were Sojourners in Egypt. This book seeks to answer that proposal.

Top review from the United States

In a chilling prediction, Shorris lays bare the abandonment of the millenia-old commitment Jews have to the victims of social and economic injustice. Not all Jews, but those who have decided consciously or not that they are "passing," sufficiently cloaked with the Gentile respectability of class, the right education and family means to forget that as little as two generations ago, their grandparents were quite frequently regarded as many still regard non-whites today: the Other, to be feared, denied, repressed and oppressed if necessary.

The attainment of the same respectability their former oppressors enjoyed has given this certain type the freedom to throw off the chains of compassion and remembrance and embrace the very attitudes that squeezed their forebears' hopes and dreams. Jewish Trotskyites railed against the evils of capitalism in the Thirties; Jewish neo-Trotskyites like Irving Kristol, Marty Peretz, Norman Podhoretz and Charles Krauthammer called themselves "neo-conservatives" and turned their anger against every social program intended to help the poor, the brutalized, the ignorant, the non-white and the helpless. The Jews Without Mercy represent a return of the sort of Jews who massacred half a million people in the Kitos War, and the sort of Jew who today rules the Ghazans.

Shorris' book sank without a trace when it was published, but it's now getting an audience because of the disastrous influence of the neo-conservative reign since the 1980's.
