Dan Snaith is better known as Caribou. So you may be forgiven not making any connection between that body of work and this. However, on this form Caribou might be a thing of the past as this is a solid collection of dance riffs and tunes.

Each track starts out with a beat and riff and then kind of explodes into action. Listen to the snippet of Yes I Know on this page and you don't hear the moment ten seconds after the fade out where it explodes into life with horns and vocals. Its this layered approach which keeps you interested and eventually leaving the tracks in your consciousness. Pairs is another fine example with its African influence obvious from the start and then its turns into a house music track. This is an album with lots of influences from Africa, Miami House and soul. But at its heart its a great dance collection

Snaith may have made his name as Caribou. This will push him further forward. Its a great collection and for my money better than anything he has delivered before.

The album as a whole is not as good as the "single" YES I KNOW but look still 5 stars bc it is 5 stars good and there are additional standout tracks and it's Merge Records so you know the physical properties will be fine and you will also get a download card

Even though Dan Snaith, as Caribou, was already moving in a house direction with SWIM, his new moniker of Daphni goes all the way. JIAOLONG settles into a rhythm right away (as well as a hefty dose of acid disco) with "Yes, I Know" before their mix of Cos-Ber-Zam's "Ne Noya" jumps into a deep Afro fusion (which is later echoed in "Pairs"). Meanwhile, the flute and gurgling synths of "Light" offset the martial snare drum and growing acid, and a touch of Middle Eastern melody creeps onto the throbbing "Jiao," whereas "Springs" seems to be a series of sound effects set on repeat, but the blissful, hissing ends the album on a nice, sci-fi soundtrack. A fascinating extension of Snaith's musical persona.

There are certainly some highs and lows on the album but the highs are definitely worth it. Check out Caribou's "Resident Adviser Mix" if you want a taste of what's on this album.
