How has Islamic State been able to muster support far beyond its initial constituency in the Arab world and attract tens of thousands of foreign volunteers, including converts to Islam, and seemingly countless supporters online? In this compelling intervention into the debate about Islamic State's origins and future prospects, the renowned French political scientist, Olivier Roy, argues that while terrorism and jihadism are familiar phenomena, the group's deliberate pursuit of death has produced a new kind of radical violence. In other words, we're facing not a radicalization of Islam, but the Islamization of radicalism.

Indeed, Roy argues, young European Muslims drawn to IS are attracted to the organization's violent means rather than utopian dreams of a caliphate. He places IS in the context of other radical millenialist groups such as China's Red Guards, Cambodia's Khmer Rouge, and Uganda's Lord's Resistance Army. In doing so, he shows that violence, not religious fundamentalism, is the central thread connecting young people who are drawn to radical groups.

This is a very turgid work, full of sociological allusions and psychobabble. It goes without saying that the poor brainwashed murderers get off lightly while the Professor from Florence struggles to understand the complexity of their cause - only to conclude that they never really had a cause in the first place !

At one point he laughably suggests that they may even be under the influence of an arthouse masterpiece, Pier Paulo Pasolini's Salo (or 120 days of Sodom), as the creatures of the caliphate are also a little bit obsessed with sex.

There is a lot of psychobabbling about the generational conflict that first sent these former bouncy castle managers on their collective way to the war zones of Bosnia and Syria, before returning to delight us all by committing suicide in various ways. The author finds these pathetic characters to be worthy of academic study.

I can't quite understand why he believes the Islamic State would have any appeal to the hardworking taxpayers who have to pay the bill for the on-going rampages of these religious zealots. When is someone going to write a book about "the complex minds" of the good soldiers and policemen who are assigned the duty of stopping and punishing these louts ?

Now that at least would be an enjoyable read. Suggested title: "The Global Appeal of Civilization and the Secular State".

I was disappointed with this book. It was written as if it was a report, which did not make for a easy or enjoyable reed. Also, I found some parts difficult to follow. This book seems to have been written for people with some fearly good knowledge of its subject, and not for the average peroson. More time could have been spent explaining the author's views, considering the book has only 100 odd pages to read.
