Having ripped abdominals may not make you a celebrity--well, unless you're that guy on Jersey Shore--but if you're looking to "lose weight, get healthy, and change your life," as trainer Jillian Michaels puts it, then 6 Week Six-Pack should find a spot on your menu. It won't be easy; there are two very challenging routines featured here, each of which should be practiced five days a week for three weeks. Nor will it be simply a matter of lying on the floor and doing a few sit-ups. Michaels's mantra is "shed fat while toning your core," and in the course of these two approximately 30-minute routines (Level 1 is hard; Level 2 is harder), you'll spend a good amount of time on your feet doing vigorous aerobic work (marching in place, squats, lunges, leg lifts, and such, all designed to keep the heart rate up), as well as the demanding mat exercises, some of which derive from the plank (or upward pushup) position and thus build arm as well as core strength. The pace is quick, rests are few, and Michaels is a demanding instructor; there's no coddling here, and the workouts are definitely not for the slothful or faint of heart. At 26 years old and nearly six feet tall, I should be a shapely Amazon of a gal, but I'm not. A lack of portion control on my part and a full time job reviewing video games has lead to a physique that's not only unflattering, but unhealthy.

Over the course of months of exercise using Jillian's DVDs, I lost weight DRAMATICALLY. (To give you an idea, I went from a size 28 down to a size 16. Keep in mind I'm six foot tall here.) There was no magic, no bull, just hard work, encouragement, and inspiration. The thing about Jillian is that while she's earned and deserves her reputation for being a tough trainer, she's not an unpleasant one. There's just something about her I respond well to; she's firm but fair during her workouts, and her enthusiasm for what she's doing is infectious.

Unfortunately, late last year, in addition to getting complacent, my husband and I were also hammered by weeks where nothing seemed to go right and we had to deal with one calamity after another... a burst water main, our car breaking down (repeatedly), the declining health of a family member... it just went on and on, and long story short, I fell into depression and packed nearly all the weight back on. (I was back to a size 22.) To say I was embarrassed was an understatement; I felt ashamed of myself, that I had let not only myself but my husband down, and instead of getting back on ye olde proverbial horse, I just made things worse.

Four weeks ago I had enough. For four weeks solid, I have done an hour of exercise every day (30 Day Shred and 6 Week Six Pack) and I've already lost over twenty pounds. That was the worst part; getting back on the scale for the first time in months and seeing how far I'd let myself go. The work is hard, but I feel better than I have in years...

While I loved her most recent workouts (Yoga Meltdown and Shred it with Weights), they were very different in terms of her traditional style. 6 Week Six-Pack reminds me exactly why I started doing her workouts in the first place. It is very reminiscent of 30-Day Shred and Banish Fat Boost Metabolism, with a mix of traditional exercises and some I've never seen before. She blends weight training and cardio exercises, all of which focus on the abs in this case. She explains why crunches alone don't work--you must blast off the fat over your abs with cardio in order for them to show. You never stop moving in this DVD, and you'll start to sweat quickly. It's only about 35 minutes, so it's definitely easy to fit in regardless of your daily schedule. If you want a quick but hardcore way to get ripped, this is it!

I did this workout on YouTube via a BD player I have at home and wanted the workout DVD. This is very challenging, however it delivers results...The side plank in level one is too hard for me, so I just do the side crunch when they are doing the side plank...That would be my only suggestion for those that have trouble with that move because it is extremity hard...

I will also mention use a 2.5 or one pound weight when you start because the moves themselves are burning so much alone...oh use the weight when you are ready to, not to start off...I have been working out with weights so it wasn't hard with a 2.5 weight...

Other then using your common sense as to what you can and can't do and the side plank this workout is great!

Update:

Part 2 again do what you can the moves are great and burn a lot of calories! I just hold a plank pose when it gets too hard in part 2 and I'm still sweating up a storm.

I can say that I've lost major inches! The scale hasn't moved as far as weight, but my clothes are a dress size down, it's because mussel weighs more then fat and takes up less space. The scale will drop again, but I feel so much better, fitter and it's only been two months!

I like this set of workouts because Jillian isn't annoying, she's straight forward, and I've gotten results (you do have to work for them mind you, but it's so worth it) The stomach is an issue area for me, but I've lost overall inches lost count! If you put in the effort, you will see the inches drop, stick with it.

Over all I'm highly pleased with this workout DVD and plain on getting more of her stuff in the future.

Had been using JM 30-day shred for a while and loved it but was getting bored with the routine so turned to the 6 Week Six-Pack as my mid-section is the only area that still seems to be lagging in the "get fit" department and I was looking for some new routines. This review is based on only 1 use and I plan to re-re-review in 6 weeks, but the first level workout is exactly what I was looking for. New moves and a faster pace. I certainly could not get through it but it's exactly how I felt after my first day of the 30-day shred and I eventually broke through those moves so I'm looking forward to the challenge! One caveat, I noticed my lower back twinging about an hour after the workout so I'm worried I might be having an issue with my form for one/some of the exercises. Will keep that in mind as I go.

Week 1 UPDATE: Just finished week 1 and changing review to 5 stars! I've lost 2 pounds but more importantly I'm starting to see some definition/ tone on the sides of my tummy. The lower flabby part is still not budging but losing another inch around my waist definitely means I'm on the right track! In her earlier DVD - 30 day shred - after the first week I'd turn the volume down and listen to something else keeping a stray eye on the DVD so I know when to change the routine, but for the 6wk6pk the routines change so quickly that I need to pay attention. And I love her motivational "stay with me! stay with me!" that a girl sometimes needs to push through. Re: the lower back thing I had on my first day, I haven't felt it since so I assume I must have corrected my form.
