Directed by Jim Henson, this parody of the film noir gangster films takes us through the busy but dangerous town of Dog City, teeming with colorful Muppet Dog characters. Rowlf the dog is your guide through the underside of canine life during the 1930s in Dog City. Our hero, Ace, enters the world of bulldog gangsters and terrier molls when he inherits a saloon, “The Doghouse,” from his late Uncle Harry. Unwilling to pay protection money, Ace finds himself the target of Bugsy, a bulldog bully who owns most of Dog City, and also happens to be one of the foremost proponents of senseless violence. Ace also comes nose to nose with a beautiful runaway collie named Colleen. Colleen and Ace team up to take on Bugsy and his thugs in the tumultuous, dog-eat-dog world of Dog City.

Since The Muppets got bought by Disney, certain specials that featured Kermit the Frog had Kermit footage cut out of them a little less enjoyable...but for some reason, they were able to keep Rowlf the Dog uncut from this film noir comedy special and the story itself is a hoot. It's a must have for Muppet fans not to mention Rowlf fans

Like many have said, the first half and ending halfs of this Jim Henson Hour episode have been edited out and it's basically just the Dog City film part of The Jim Henson Hour. I kind of hesitated in wanting to buy it because of that but still, where else can you get The Jim Henson Hour episodes legally? So I bought the DVD, waiting and expecting a bad menu or something and suddenly I hear The Jim Henson Hour theme playing and that just brought a smile to my face. And also the behind the scenes photo gallery featuring a late Jim Henson on the set of Dog City looking at everything in a classic thinking pose. Awesome special feature. But still I yearn for The Jim Henson Hour complete series. This is good for an economic priced DVD but there should be a complete series for us collectors / Jim Henson Muppet fans know what I mean? But other then that, the film segment of the episode is uncut and uncensored. Buggy Them's Machine Gun and All! :) Nice an PG! Or what Buggy Them would say "Senseless Violence, just the way I love it" lol But what's amazing about this was, it was when The Jim Henson Company was slightly going more towards a satirical view within the later work which of course would bring us one of the greatest satirical shows ever "Dinosaurs" which was Jim Henson's original idea but wasn't made until a year after his passing. Anyway, I give it 4, I would give it 5 but it's mainly because it's cut.

Ace Hart ist der Scherlock unter den Hunden in DOG CITY.Er löst jeden Fall,mit witz und können.Auf dieser DVD könnt ihr die ersten 5 Fälle sehen.Da sind: 1.Der Fall der verschwundenen Quietschtiere,2.Der Fall mit den lockeren Schrauben, 3.Hick-Hack-Hackepeter,4.Nicht gehorchen will gelernt sein und 5.Der goldene Sultanspantoffel.Die Serie kenne ich noch von früher deswegen freute ich mich wie ein Hund als sie endlich auf DVD erschien.Die Folgen sind lustig erzählt und mit seiner ca.125 Minuten lauf Zeit (wenn man alles in eins durch kuckt)gut erzählt.Lohnt sich für jedes alter.Ich kann nur sagen kaufen.Allerdings kann man es nur auf Deutsch kucken deswegen leider nur 4 von 5 Sternen.Aber das tut den spaß keinen abruch (finde ich).Ich hoffe es kommen noch mehr Folgen auf DVD raus.

Made in the 1980s this movie contains material that would probably not be allowed for children in this PC-mad age. I remember Jim Henson saying on set that it was the most fun he'd ever making a production. I was the character designer and changed the writer's original canine choice for Bugsy, the gangland boss from a German Shepherd to a Bulldog. The puppet was made by the incomparable Ed Christie, who also built Mad Dog, the broken-nosed 'heavy' I based on the actor Victor McGlaglen. Jim Henson loved Bugsy and decided to play him himself, with all the abandon he had to rein in on The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. Dog City was the canine On the Waterfront but with tons of wit from a great writer. Great lines, great puppets, great fun! Bruce McNally
