Perfect gift!

I first purchased this handbook in 1983 for my undergrad children’s literature class and not only used it as valuable resource in my teaching, but as an inspiration as I raised my own family. I have purchased dozens of copies over the years as baby shower gifts and gifts to new parents many of whom have exclaimed what a difference reading aloud to their children has made in their lives. I am speaking as a reading specialist and as a mother as I say every parent should have a copy of this book.

Terrible Rewrite

The first parenting book I ever read was Jim Trelease's "Read-Aloud Handbook" - 5th Edition. It's also the best parenting book I've ever read. My wife and I give this to nearly every expectant parent we know. We believe reading-aloud is that foundational to good parenting. That being said, this update is not the book I remember. It's been poorly rewritten and in need of editing. Jim's warm and grandfatherly voice is gone, replaced with... an over-the-top enthusiasm? I'm not sure what to call it. It's like Mr. Rogers was replaced by Binky the Clown. It's grating. I hated this update so much I feel guilty that I gave one copy away, not realizing what I'd just done. Please do yourself a favor: look for an older edition. The 7th edition is great - but my 5th edition still holds up well. The only real changes since had been mostly updated resources and statistics. The heart of the book - what sold me on this lifestyle - has remained the same for years. But that heart is now missing in the 8th edition.

As a school librarian, I was fortunate to hear author Jim Trelease probably in his first edition of the Read-Aloud-Handbook. I used it myself for selecting books for children. I also started giving this as a gift at baby showers -- sometimes with a recommended book. I really have gotten some uplifting thank-yous. Most recently the new mom told her dad (who told me) that she learned things from this book she didn't know she needed. It's a gift that keeps giving. I highly recommend it.

This new edition of the Read Aloud Handbook is fantastic! It includes important aspects of earlier editions and adds wonderful new insight and examples in efforts to update the book. The questions "Why Read Aloud" and "When to Begin" are revisited, adding some new insight. The significance of the read aloud experience and the link to visual literacy are discussed, as well as the impact of electronic media on reading. Of course, the back is filled with old titles and new, in lots of book categories, with meaningful summaries and related titles. A great book for every parent and educator!

Contains invaluable information about reading aloud and many resources about excellent / enjoyable books for every age group. I cannot say enough good things about this title. It also arrived in excellent condition. I would also check out his website for resources that connect to this book (ie: if you have a parent event at school then there are numerous PDF docs, many more).

The Read-Aloud Handbook came highly recommended from a friend who has been gifting it to people for years. When I saw that this version was updated I thought that would be a good thing. Wrong. The first thing I noticed is most of the books recommended are recent - 2013 - 2018. There are a few of the wonderful classics. Not enough though. I'm going to order an older version that keeps more in line with Jim Trelease's vision. To interest children in reading and recommending good books - go for the original - without the "modern" revisions from another source. My dos centavos.
