But, what Mitchell really emphasized was how the JHE took off in a big swoosh, in no time, going from a few hundred people to thousands of screaming fans in a matter of a few months. They were constantly whisked everywhere, with no time to think, no time for nothing, No days off. Playing 60 concerts in 61 days to utter exhaustion, then only to finish a grueling tour and be rushed into a studio, and then back out on another tour.
In less than 4 yrs. time, the Jimi Hendrix Experience did approximately 530 concerts. In contrast, the Rolling Stones did less than 60 concerts in that same timeframe. The band was worked to where everyone in the band had frayed nerves, while piles of cash were made, but the band saw little of it, including Hendrix.
The travesty was both Mitchell and Noel Redding, signing contracts that summarily made them hired employees with no share of the record sales. Michael Jeffries, the band's manager, had also done the same to the members of the Animals, when he managed that band as well.
So, Mitchell and Redding who were immense parts of creating that Jimi Hendrix "sound", were excluded from royalty earnings and pretty much left penniless after Hendrix died.
Mitchell recants drugs, sex, and rock n' roll all happening at the speed of a meteor with no let up. They were kept in a state of constant exhaustion and when the end came, he was left numb like Redding.
And the real insult was the people who controlled the Hendrix state making hundreds of millions of dollars in the past 43 years. To date, the Hendrix estate is worth approx. 280 million dollars, yet Mitchell and Redding received virtually nothing after the band's demise. Over that length of time, Hendrix record and merchandise sales averaged over $7 million dollars a year. Mitchell and Redding were not sham musicians, they were very talented in their own right and made that JHE sound. They should not have had to struggle all those years, not having the slightest cut of any proceeds.
Mitch could have told more backstage "tell all" stories, but I don't know what that would have added to the book. He expounded on everyone's frustrations, Jimi's and Noel's, not just his own. In those days, proper scheduling was not taken in consideration. The band would play a concert in San Francisco, the next day in Miami, then back to L.A., then on to the some place like Maine. They were criss-crossing the country, traveling thousands of miles virtually everyday of the week, with no days off between concerts,...the effect left the band stumbling out of airplanes, unable to get up in their motel rooms,... an unreal tale of the band in a sleep deprived state that went on for years, while hordes of groupies in every city wanted the band to party, smoke, drink, and have orgies with them. The offset was drugs that numbed the band members sense of space and time.
Mitch was a great drummer and made an immense contribution to the JHE. What can't be under emphasized is the speed at which the JHE operated and pushed by Chas Chandler and Michael Jeffries. Mitchell made light of that. The book is a great read, with lots of unseen band photos. I recommend the book as it told what it was REALLY like in the first person to be part of that band.
Mitchell, writes his personal memoirs of his years with Hendrix on the road almost in diary fashion with amazing detail, along with rare photographs of rocks greatest guitarist.
HOWEVER, bearing in mind that Mitchell has been relatively reticent elsewhere, it's valuable to have a chunk of text in his tone of voice, also providing a window into his character. Clearly he was concerned primarily with music, and everything else was secondary. He has no false modesty, but doesn't pump himself up, either. It's very rational, very factual, and shows a shrewd assessment of the decisions that were made during the brief years of the Experience.
Incidentally, Noel Redding's autobiography complains endlessly about money. Mitchell barely mentions it.

It was very interesting to get at glimps of the Jimi Hendrix story through the eyes of Mitch Mitchell.
