This apparently limited edition release has tracks from Vaughan's earliest days in the '60s (in Storm) up through The Fabulous Thunderbirds, solo albums, and on albums were he was a featured player, into 2020. Included are several previously unreleased tracks (Disc 2 has nine unreleased tracks including a great version of Willie Dixon's "I Can't Quit You Baby" with Vaughan playing some great Texas/Chicago style blues guitar) that are more than mere filler. The 240 page hardcover book is filled with many photos throughout Vaughan's life and ephemera, plus liner notes (including a short '78 interview with the Austin Sun newspaper) that runs throughout the book, all of which help paint a picture of Vaughan's life in music. Each disc comes in a wallet style cardboard package with a track list and a different photo inside. The book and the five CDs fit into an inner thin cardboard slipcase and that slides into a substantial hard cardboard outer slipcase. The sound is very good throughout this box set. All in all a very nice presentation to celebrate Vaughan's 70th birthday.
With over six hours of music names you'll know include Albert Collins, B.B.King, Bo Diddley, Charlie Musselwhite, Buddy Guy, Dr. John, Eric Clapton, John Lee Hooker, Robert Cray, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, the Vaughan brothers, and a number of others.
Disc 1 is all about The Fabulous Thunderbirds.
Disc 2 has more Thunderbirds, plus Collins, Lou Ann Barton, and others.
Disc 3 has Jimmie Vaughan, Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Cray, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, and others.
Disc 4 has Vaughan, plus Hooker, Lazy Lester, and others.
Disc 5 includes Little Milton, Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), and Vaughan's early band Storm.
As you can see this box set is a great overview of Vaughan's life in music so far. Anyone who likes Jimmie Vaughan's style of playing will like this set. Yes, it's expensive. But it's worth it for anyone who likes this style of music.
