This book is the tale of two New Yorkers. There's Jimmy, the bigger than life personality with his unlikely climb to the top of the moral bottom along with his financial success and social prominence. And there's a young girl who looks up to her uncle who adores her and takes care of her as if she were his own in the parallel story written be the author. It's about her journey from a child well-loved and taken care-of, through periods where her world was shifting underneath her as she was swept up in the wake of her uncles bombastic life. These intertwining stories are deep and rich with feeling and authenticity that bring those days back to life.
The amount of detail that Ms Cortland brings to the story is a secondary delight. Her description of New York in those days matches perfectly to the atmosphere of a post war city on the verge of great things and big money. She takes the reader into the night clubs, grocery stores, through the streets and alleys in the hottest town on the planet. It is filled with detail from off the beaten path as well as decorated with the political, social and controversial happenings of those post-war heady days.
In the end “Me and Joey Blue Eyes” is a moral tale told by a talented writer, in an amazing first book.
I believe this book would make a great movie. A mix of the Godfather/ meets Goodfella's (Narrated by a woman) with the humor and feel of Little Big Man with Dustin Hoffman. With Jimmy Blue Eye's starting at the age of 96 having his early life told on to its eventual end.
Truth is stranger than fiction. May you be born in interesting times and live an interesting life? This family certainly did. May we all be so lucky!
