I purchased this as the 2 LP vinyl set because of my love of music played on a record player. This album comes as a 2 vinyl record set in a hinged double gatefold cover. I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't pressed with 180 gram vinyl but still a nice weight/press.
I have been a fan of GaGa's music since the beginning of her career and really enjoy hearing her vocals on the tracks of this album. It seems to go to a new place that we have yet to see with her, maybe a bit deeper and more mysterious than before but always classic GaGa sound. The first release of "Perfect Illusion" is really the only pop song and I understand why it was chosen for airplay at the local radio stations. You hear it and know that she is in the house. What really impressed me are most of the other tracks that are more soulful and richer in sound and expression. Joanne for instance, goes somewhere else and gives you a deeper journey into her soul. Joanne is probably my favorite track on this album. The song "Hey Girl" with Florence Welch is another favorite. There are two songs marked as explicit but in the music of today they are tame by comparison. From the time the needle hits the vinyl until you hear the last song you are in her world and it is only a world she can musically give to you.
One of the best things about buying vinyl on Amazon is the fact you get the auto-rip feature so you can put your music on your iPhone to take it with you or just listen through the Amazon music app. The set comes with a digital booklet in addition to the 2 LPs. The liner is beautifully done and well documented. If you have a record player this is one of the best ways to experience one of the best new albums on the market today. If you like her older music you are in for a real treat with this release!
I will add some photos of the album cover, liner and pictures of the actual vinyl soon - stand by. As always, all of the photographs are taken by me and I am in no way a professional. My photos are here to help you make a decision on purchasing this album and I do recommend it regardless of the format you choose.
Diehard fans of her electropop eras like The Fame Monster, Born This Way, or Artpop will likely be put off by Joanne. There is nothing on here that even hints at the Lady Gaga of those days. With the exception of maybe "Dancing in Circles", there isn't a dance beat to be found anywhere. Joanne has a very heavy country and Americana influence, even while still being a pop record at heart. The album is also a departure for her in terms of songwriting...this is by far the most personal album she's ever released. The simple album cover actually represents the music on this record very well.
My favorite tracks are "Diamond Heart", which is the "Marry the Night" of this album for sure...starting on a fierce rock number to introduce the album. The minimalistic and gorgeous "Joanne" is a sweet ode to her aunt, with its hushed guitar, quiet synths, and Gaga singing in a tender, thin voice. It's mesmerizing. "Sinner's Prayer" is country-type banger that I could listen to on repeat. "Just Another Day" from the deluxe edition is reminiscent of Gaga emulating Elton John and it's brilliant. "John Wayne", "A-yo", and the afore-mentioned "Dancing in Circles" are the closest this album has to any additional official singles.
This album is clearly going to be divisive. I'm curious to see how it will be received a few years from now, and how it'll fit amongst the rest of her repertoire. Right now though, I haven't stopped listening to Joanne on repeat. It's an album that's truly from the heart, and you can actually hear just how close to her this album is. It's a new level for Gaga, and I'm happy to say she has succeeded admirably!
