Editorial Reviews

Review

"A required introductory text for anyone who is interested in achieving financial independence ... Jake has done an incredible job of distilling all the plans and strategies available into a simple, clear framework that you can use to design your ideal financial freedom plan." -Joshua Sheats, Radical Personal Finance Podcast

"Job Free should be on the required reading list for high school and college students.  It offers a concise, compelling blueprint of four different paths that all lead to a job-free life; something that most young people haven't even begun to contemplate.  The advice in Job Free is also highly relevant to mid-career and late-career employees seeking a way out of the servitude of working for someone else." -Root of Good (rootofgood.com)

"Job Free is the book I wish I had when we created our plan for financial independence.  Jake does a fantastic job combining inspiration and practical examples of escaping the 9-5.  His "do what works for you" approach is unique and refreshing in the personal finance community." -Mike Moyer (mikeandlauren.com)

Jake is a wonderful communicator and a great example of someone who has lived job-free. He put in the work on his podcast The Voluntary Life to develop his own story and gather stories from others, and it shows in the breadth of this book and in the important narrative of how the people featured here found freedom.

Even though the chapters cover different (and sometimes competing) ways of quitting the rat race, Jake is balanced, helpful, and curious throughout, and it makes a new reader want to approach entrepreneurship, unjobbing, etc. in the same way. Jake's deeper-than-average philosophical and economic understanding helps the book avoid the pitfalls vagueness and wish fulfillment of so much self-help literature, and the practical advice here is tested and achievable.

Regardless of where you stand in your career, you should read it. You need to know that you have options. You need to know that you're doing what you're doing because it makes you come alive. As soon as you know you can live job-free, you'll be completely free to do just that.

My general impression of this is excellent. I generally dislike "self-help" books - although I do often read them - as I often find they're fool of airy, abstract pseudo-philosophising which are basically the author's personal beliefs and often completely unrealistic and impractical. This book is the opposite. As a hands-on practical starter-guide to getting out of the rat-race the book is perfect. It combines originality AND practicality and the author's points are exact, to-the-point and obviously applicable in real life. Also, a major help which I haven't seen in other "self-help" books is the reference to other similarly-themed (i.e. unjobbing, financial independence etc.) blogs, sites etc, where one can take this further and pursue information and ideas towards achieving financial independence. The book has given me serious material to think upon. Very few people can boast to work on a job they really enjoy day-in day-out. This little gem is a major eye-opener as to alternatives that are right in front of us. Very good one.

I found this book was refreshingly honest and down-to-earth. Although I have read a number of books on creating your own revenue streams, there were ideas here that I had never before heard, such as that of extreme saving (for the purpose of early retirement). I appreciated that the author discusses both the pros and cons of each approach, which I have found to be a rare thing in books on this topic. There are consequences to every lifestyle choice, and not all of them completely wonderful, so it's useful to go into them with at least an idea of what might pose challenges for you. I also appreciated the fact that the author made his wealth outside of the self-help industry. These are approaches that a non-Tony-Robbins mortal being could apply, which is refreshing.

This is a powerful book that can help you live the life of your dream. In this work Desyllas provides not only the inspiration but the practical steps to achieve the lifestyle and the job – – – or unjob– – – that you want.

I love the rich examples that he cited from other successful people and how he showed us what to do to apply those in our own life. This book is not for everyone, but for those who want a lifestyle of freedom and living a life of their own choosing, in their own way, it is a must read!

I highly recommend this to my fellow entrepreneurs and freedom-loving people around the world. Read this book. Devour it. Live it. You will be glad you did.

This is a nice book that brings together and summarizes four strategies that are "out there" about getting out of the rat race, namely:

"Strategy 1: Save your way to a job-free life. Extreme savers aim to put away enough money to live from their investment returns indefinitely, so that they can retire early and devote their time to finding fulfillment in any way they choose.

Strategy 2: Earn money outside a regular job, doing what you love. Unjobbers earn money from multiple income sources outside a job, such as freelancing or side businesses.

Strategy 3: Create a business that supports your lifestyle. People following this strategy aim to design a business that requires so little of their time that they can work as much as they please and spend the rest of their time doing whatever gives them fulfillment.

Strategy 4: Build a business to achieve financial independence. Whereas lifestyle entrepreneurs use a business to provide income, startup entrepreneurs aim to build capital value in a business that they can one day sell. choose aspects of each."

Jake explains how each one is used and provides lots of excellent references for further study. This book could save you a lot of time because its a broad overview of many other works and help clarify your thinking as to what may be the most appropriate choices for your situation.

The best part in my view is that he does not try to argue that one strategy is "better" than the others or that they are mutually exclusive. As he says: "There is no need to choose one of the four ways to the exclusion of all the others. However, it helps to identify the four basic strategies separately."

As Charlie Munger says, if you combine several ideas that have positive feedback loops that are aligned, you can achieve "lala-palooza" effects.
