Use Jobe’s Organics Compost Starter with Biozome to speed up the composting process. Jobe’s Organics Compost Starter with Biozome, is specially formulated to help break down the organic matter in compost faster leading to a better soil for plants. The Jobe’s Biozome advantage for organic gardening: improves the long-term soil quality of your garden, increases root mass, promotes plant growth and helps your garden resist disease, insects, drought and other unfavorable conditions within a growing season. Delivers long-term benefits without chemicals. Jobe’s Biozome is a unique and proprietary blend of beneficial microorganisms Archaea, Mycorrhizal fungi and healthy bacteria. Archaea, a recently identified microorganism found in some of the planet’s most extreme environments, such as hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor. In garden applications, scientists have discovered that these microbes actually clean the soil, returning it to a healthier, more natural state. Jobe’s Biozome contains a proprietary species of Archaea that quickly breaks down complex hydrocarbons and minerals into basic nutrients and trace elements that plants readily absorb. Mycorrhizal fungi expands the surface-absorbing area of the roots by 100 to 1,000 times, sending out filaments that act as extensions of the plant’s root system, helping plants absorb more water and nutrients. In return, the fungi receive essential sugars and other compounds from the plant roots, fueling their own growth. Finally, the healthy bacterial strain in Biozome improves the soil structure and quality, keeping nutrients near the roots. Jobe’s Organics Compost Starter is OMRI listed and may be used in certified organic food production according to the USDA National Organic Program. Jobe’s Organics soil amendments will help you create the perfect growing environment for your plants. We recommend doing a soil test before using any soil amendments. Top Customer Reviews
To be generous this product is just OK- with about the same results of a few hot days with moisture. I purchased this at my local W-mart.
Jobe's Organic Compost Starter is easy to use. The plastic bag is sturdy and resealable zip-lock type. It is a small bag, and the amount needed per application depends on the size of your compost pile.
*Instructions are: Liberally sprinkle 2 cups of Jobe's Organic Compost Starter per cubic yard of organic waste. Turn compost and water to moisten. DO NOT SOAK. You should begin to results within 2-3 weeks.
The Jobe's Organic Compost Starter product does not stink too badly. It is not noticeable if you practice safe application- use gloves, pour it low to the compost and do not stand down wind to inhale it. My compost pile does not stink, and after applying the product it did not add a bad odor to the compost pile.
When you first open the bag there is a odor of the product that wafts out and yes, it will smell if you stick your nose into the bag or close to the granules (but why do that? lol).
I use the Geo-bin compost bin1 X Geobin Compost Bin - I am very happy with the geo-bin, I have no odor or other negatives with my compost.
However, I did not turn over the compost for many months and it was filling up. In the Fall, I had added a lot of yard waste- huge bags of maple leaves and grass clippings and during this Winter I continuously added my veggie kitchen scraps to the bin. Then this Spring I added the first few yard mow clippings... thus my compost bin was almost stuffed to capacity.
So, I wanted to help jump start the decomposition process by adding the Jobe's Organic Compost starter...
Each time I used the Compost Starter I added two 16 ounce cups full of the product sprinkled around the bin (I have it fully expanded), watered the bin a bit to moisten and agitated the compost stuff in the bin.
I did this twice with 3 week intervals. I have enough left over for 1 more application.
So far, the results of using this product has been underwhelming.
I am not sure if using this product is doing anything at all to accelerate or compost differently. The temperature in my area is increasing and thus the decomposition is moving along as it normally would without the compost starter. I was expecting something more. I was looking forward to a plus factor of heat generated from my compost bin because of the Jobe's Organic Compost Starter, but that has not happened.
I will use it again for the last time to finish off the bag and if by some miracle something suddenly happens and my compost is on fire decomposing (not literally- although that can happen with mismanaged compost piles) I will update my review. Until then it's just meh- a flat performance.
With the other reviews that found success with this product I wonder if maybe this product works better with closed canisters or enclosed tumbler turn-style composters, rather than with open compost bins like the Geo bin.
I think I should have saved my money, but now I know for sure and there is no doubt that warm moist weather- while keeping up with giving it a good turn every so often stimulates my compost bin just fine, no additives or starters needed.
I recently built a basic compost pile for the grass clippings - 6x6x3', using pressure-treated fence pickets and 4x4" poles from Home Depot. The grass has been growing fast, so I decided to collect it for compost every other week while mulching and leaving it on the lawn other times. After couple weeks, went to turn the pile with a pitchfork and found a stinky slimy mess, so decided to give this product a try.
The way I use it: dump a bag of grass, sprinkle some of this starter on top, keep mowing, dump a bag, spread this stuff on top, continue ad infinitum (I have a large lot). Today went to turn over the compost again and it is steaming hot inside! Even in 80 degree weather I could clearly feel the heat emanating from the pile, which is turning brown inside. Now, I have read a book dedicated to composting and it says that pure grass is a sub-optimal choice, but this is all I have and this compost starter made a noticeable difference. I'll post an update if I change my mind for some reason, but for now I am happy with the product.
Note: the compost starter does stink when you add it to your compost. However, the odor does not remain when the compost is complete.
A must have product in my garden shed and another great Prime Pantry value.
