Editorial Reviews

Clint Eastwood stars as former bounty hunter turned hired gunslinger Joe Kidd, who finds himself in the middle of a range war in rough and rugged New Mexico. Following an armed uprising by local Mexican revolutionaries who claim they have been cheated out of their land, Kidd is hired to crush the rebellion by a wealthy land baron (Robert Duvall) with interests in the disputed territory. Kidd’s and his employer’s interests are soon at odds when he falls for a beautiful Hispanic rebel in this top-notch western from acclaimed veteran director John Sturges.

Scenes are missing on this DVD by Universal. Besides Kidd's and Helen's personal scene that's not apparent, what about the missing dinner scene at Helen's cabin? Duvall and Stroud reveal their characters even more at the dinner table but it is not shown on this version. Duvall invites a reluctant Helen to the table and takes command for himself. This film gets no respect by not being complete.

Although "Joe Kidd" isn't Clint Eastwood's best western, it's very good with a strong supporting cast (Robert Duvall, Don Stroud, John Saxon) and the Universal blu-ray of the film looks quite nice.

Kidd (Eastwood) finds himself released from jail and roped into hunting down a Mexican revolutionary (Saxon) who threatens the holdings of a wealthy land owner (Duvall). Kidd finds himself working for a man he despises to help kill a man he comes to respect.

While the conclusion of the film is a bit simple, the sharp direction by John Stuges ("The Magnificent Seven", "The Great Escape") and the characterizations from Elmore Leonard ("Justified", "Get Shorty", "Out of Sight") plus the performances from a top notch cast make "Joe Kidd" a worthwhile western.

For those who are curious, the film is complete (evidently there was an earlier DVD that was missing a few key scenes).

The blu-ray from Universal looks quite nice. The grainy images you see here is how the film has always looked and is intended to look. Detail is, with the exception of one scene, sharp and colors positively pop.

The vintage mono audio sounds quite nice with dialog up front in the presentation and surprising depth for a vintage audio presentation like this.

Sadly Universal has elected not to provide us with any special features. I can't recall if there were any promotional making of featurettes produced for the film (it was pretty common at the time but I can't find anything or any information online about one being produced). It's a pity that Universal elected not to add a commentary track or provide some sort of special featurs for the film given its star, writer and director. We do get a vintage trailer for the film.

Although "Joe Kidd" isn't a great movie, it is an entertaining western and quite enjoyable.

I don't understand why this got mediocre to bad reviews,I've seen this movie many times & think it's as good or better than any of his early work.As a bonus you get Robert Duval & Don Stroud(who you know is going to get killed before the end of the movie).
Highly recommended to any Clint fan !

Clint Eastwood's fourth American western 'Joe Kidd' (Malpaso/Universal, 1972) is an understated, underrated late contribution to director John Sturges' ('The Magnificent Seven,' 'The Great Escape') estimable oeuvre. Considered a potboiler by some, with its low-key performances and gimmick-free antihero-saves-the-day plot structure, there are complexities here that don't meet the eye on first viewing (e.g., Eastwood's titular character is arguably the most fully realized to that point in his career) with a stellar supporting cast, arresting cinematography and a surprising number of iconic tough-guy showdowns. Universal's 2014 Blu-ray release looks fantastic, making use of their vivid 2007 restoration while nicely preserving the grain of the original stock in hi-def. Movie earns 3 1/2 stars; presentation (sadly, still, no extras) 4-minus.

The movie starts a little slow, Clint's character seems tame at first (by his standards), but he picks it up quickly as he throws one of Robert Duvall's "hired hands" down a flight of stairs. After that, it's Clint all the way as you know him! He has some classic one-liners, which is entertainment in itself if you like the Eastwood style of westerns. Robert Duvall played a great "bad" guy role in this film, too.

I'm building up my Clint Eastwood Blu Ray Western collection starting off with Joe Kid a movie directed by John Sturges released 1972 starring Clint Eastwood - Robert Duvall - John Saxon - Don Stroud and Stella Garcia in a Western about a an ex bounty hunter Joe Kidd ( Clint Eastwood ) who is hired by a rich land owner Frank Harlan ( R. Duvall ) to help him truck down a Mexican revolutionary Luis Charma (J. Saxon) who is fighting for land rights with shoot outs between the Kidd and Harlan's mans towards the end with a good picture , not bad acting & sound D.T.S HD Master , a PG Film 1 hour and 28 minutes long and the beauty about this movie played perfect on both my Oppo machines one set on A for North Central and South America and the other set on B Australia and Europe so must be region free matching my other Clint Eastwood Blu Ray Western Movies .

I really wanted to like this film a lot: what with Clint and Robert Duvall starring together.
But it's just not a very good film. It has the flavor of classic Clint and the western drama but lacks the substance. The story line is too improbable for even the most ardent fan. The dialogue and action are slow and drawn out. Like molasses.
And the climax is just plain limp.
Fortunately, there are so many great Clint westerns to choose from - Hang'em High, Good, Bad, and the Ugly trio, The Outlaw Josey Wales (one of Clint's favorites) that the viewer can still enjoy wonderful westerns of the highest quality - but this isn't one of them.
    Three stars.
