I have a gas powered pressure washer that gets used a lot for deck, patio and siding cleaning. It works very well, but like any gas-powered device, there’s maintenance involved. This Sun Joe gives me a decent amount of power without any fuss or muss, making it great for the smaller jobs that don’t need the power of a gas machine.
Setup is very straightforward – just a few minor assembly steps. One point of concern is the packaging – it’s OK, but Sun Joe could have done a much better job of protecting the machine for transit. The washer arrived functional, but there were a couple of small cracks on housing parts due to it getting banged around by UPS.
The build quality for most components is pretty good. There’s a lot of plastic involved in the housing, but it’s of reasonably decent quality. The wand was surprising – much better quality than I expected. It’s mostly metal, beefy and has good brass threading for the hose. The pressure tips are also very nice, and are quick-attach style. The power cord is long and has a GFI outlet on the end, which is great for safety. The detergent dispensing system is easy to use and works pretty well. The included manual is brief but does a good job of covering operation and tips/tricks.
The biggest weak spots involve the hose and hose caddy. The caddy is not very sturdy, especially the handle assembly. That’s not all that concerning since if the caddy breaks, the unit is still very usable. The hose is more concerning. It is fairly lightweight. While it is reinforced to protect against bursting, hoses are always the first thing to go, either through a break or through accidental damage. The hose is factory-attached to the unit, and the fitting is not all that easy to access. Replacing it (either before or after it breaks) with a better quality hose is not a simple task. It’s possible, but it’s not a matter of buying a standard pressure washer hose and screwing it on.
Another weak spot is the water hose connection. It’s plastic and, while it comes with an easy-spin attachment to make attaching/detaching a hose easy on the threading, I would have liked to see brass threading given this price point. Be mindful to not cross thread it when attaching a hose.
The specs on this are pretty good. In addition to the claimed 2,030 psi pressure (although I doubt that is accurate based on usage) it has a 1.57 gallon per minute (GPM) water flow. The latter is a spec that’s just as important as the pressure, since both contribute to the overall “power” of the machine. A good gas pressure washer will have 3,000+ psi and 2.5+ GPM. Thus, this won’t deliver what an average gas machine will, but it has enough punch to get through basic tasks.
It’s rated at 14.5 amps, and it did work fine on a 15 amp circuit with the washer the only item on that circuit. However, if you have the option, a 20 amp circuit would be a good idea to ensure you don’t trip a breaker.
Operation noise is excellent – this is MUCH quieter than a gas unit when operating, and totally silent when you release the trigger since the unit turns off.
I tried this out on deck cleaning, lawn furniture cleaning, BBQ cleaning and moss removal from a patio. It did a decent to good job for most tasks. Where is falls short is on tasks such as paint/finish stripping from weathered wood. It did get the job sort of done, but it took much longer and needed far more passes than my gas machine.
On the plus side, I got this set up, cleaned the BBQ and got it put away in the time it would take me to just get the gas machine setup and running. So while it can’t deliver the same level of performance as a gas machine, it’s a lot easier to deal with.
While the motor requires no maintenance, it’s very important to maintain the pump, especially when this is stored for the winter. I have been using Karcher Pump Guard on my machines for years, and it’s done a great job. It’s basically antifreeze but also has lubricants to keep seals healthy. It’s cheap and easy to use. There are other brands as well (I think B&D makes a version) but regardless of the brand, use it – a healthy pump really makes a difference in washer performance and longevity.
While this Sun Joe won’t take the place of a gas machine, it provides better than expected performance plus is very easy/quick to set up and take down. While the less than stellar packing and so-so hose/caddy quality brings my rating to 4 stars, it’s still well worth considering if you’re looking for a general use washer for basic household tasks.
I finished all three stories in one day. The solution tank was perfect! I pre-soaked each section of the house with Dawn dish washing detergent. Then proceeded to pressure wash, changing nozzles as needed. You will need to change nozzles depending on the grime that you encounter. The nozzles easily snap on and off and are small enough to allow you to keep all of them in your pockets so that you can change them without having to get off the ladder. This machine is powerful enough that I stood on a ladder, no higher than 7 feet, and I was able to clean the 3rd floor.
For the driveway and sidewalk, I attached a circular washer. It worked like a charm! Although, considering that the sidewalk had not been pressure cleaned in eight years, the circular washer could only do so much. I used the the 15 degree nozzle to remove what the circular washer could not. In total, I finished my driveway, my side walk, and my neighbor's sidewalk in less than 4 hours.
It was a weekend project made easy by the Sun Joe! No need for gasoline, or all the noise and fumes that gasoline powered pressure washers generate. There's no need to generate all that pollution when this machine is perfectly capable of getting the job done.
The unit seems to be well made and is of quality material. The plastic fittings on previous models have been changed to more durable metal fittings that don't leak. The wand is plenty long and has a trigger that is easy to operate. The handle is comfortable. I got the model with the hose reel and I'm glad I did. It quickly rolls the hose up and out of the way. I would have liked to have had a 30' hose rather than the 20' hose, but I can always buy the extension hose. The electric cord is heavy duty and is plenty long. It is double insulated with a GFI, so it fits in a standard two hole receptacle. When not in use, the cord hangs rolled up and out of the way on a hanger at the rear of the washer.
So far I have used this washer on three separate projects, and it has performed flawlessly on all three. This is my second electric pressure washer, and it is probably 50% more powerful than my first one.
Overall I am very satisfied with this, a quality pressure washer.
