The pros are:
Lightweight easy to pick up and put in the shed
Power motor that did not hang up in any way.
Blades are high-speed
The ties are Blades took on numerous rocks without hitting or damaging the steel
The ties come apart with two bolts on each side which allows you to get roots or other items to get stuck out quickly.
The 9 amp motor never once pop the breaker or pulled excessive power.
Coming out of the box the handles were a bit cumbersome to put together. You should always re-tighten handles, by hand, periodically to avoid the handle from loosening up.
The Tiller Joe is lighter then a gas powered Tiller so therefore tends the hop or jump one hitting roots or rocks. You really have to make sure you're holding on as a Tiller may take a jump from right to left suddenly.
The cutting path is smaller than most gas powered Tiller's..... But you don't have to worry about gas, oil or whether it will start !
Main Con had to get a part and they relaced with only rebuilt parts that had issues... had to lower a star for that
He went to all the usual hardware stores and almost rented one of their tillers, but found that after paying the rental fee, gas, and then renting a truck to transport the monsters they had, it was barely more $ to buy a tiller that was delivered to our doorstep for free (LOVE Prime) and that we'd then have on-hand for any future jobs that might arise.
Based on other people's feedback, we allotted ourselves about 3 hours for him to till the backyard. It took 20 minutes! Assembly was very quick and easy, and not having to mess with gasoline was wonderful. The tiller is light enough that you can carry it wherever you need to go, but tears through hard dirt and dead grass like nobody's business.
Even if it was only for one job, I would still buy this tiller. Even better, it's now sitting in the garage ready to tackle any other patches of dirt or lawn we might decide to re-sod.
I bought what I thought was a gas powered tiller at Home Depot for 199, and realized when I got home and did some research that what I had, and it said so on the box, was a cultivator. I ordered this unit, and returned the other. I was very pleased with the unit, and it was put through the test when I tilled my rocky soil (I am on a mountainside in Vermont) to plant some grass. I will say that I had turned the hard ground and leveled with a shovel the previous fall. This thing is plenty powerful. I eventually just removed the wheels to get a good deep bite, and it spit out the rocks, and got jammed a couple times with a rock that I had to pry and/or hammer out. The tines are very strong, and no bending or breaking. I found digging in left or right side, and pulling back was most efficient method.
Powerful little unit.
Handles lots of rocks OK.
Electric vs gas usual hastle of handling the cord
Small unit that is powerful but light weight requires muscle to keep from bouncing around
