This book is the first biography of J S Bach and is well worth the time of anyone interested in this great composer. It is most interesting to see what Bach's first biographer said about him.

Later scholars have shown that some of what Forkel has written is not completely accurate, but it is still well worth your time.

And you can't beat the price.

It would be greatly enhanced with a table of contents.

The opening of this book lists a number of faults with this biography. One can buy the much more recent work Bach: Music in the Castle of Heaven by John Eliot Gardiner (Oct 29, 2013). This work has a very good rating and if one wants to purchase a book on the great composer, this would be one of my considerations.

I wouldn't recommend it as it's disappointing not to read more about how he worked with the
musicians and what his daily life was like. And, I would have liked to learn more about both his
wives and his children. There is some mention of them but only about the children who became
musicians and composers. It's a bit thin all around.

Yes, I know it was a freebie, but I expected a little more. This book is rather dated—you know, sort of like one of those books you see offered for free whenever a public library is cleaning out its collection. There is a more current biography of J.S. Bach available as a Kindle book, "Johann Sebastian Bach" by Cristoph Wolff, but you have to buy it of course. I think I will check it out.

This was the first biography of JSB, written by one of his pupils. Although not always strictly accurate it is essential reading in any
study of the great man.

The earliest account of Bach's life. Short, but a necessary read
