Watching John Adams is my yearly ritual. This is one of the rare instances where , despite the usual "artistic liberties" taken that good History is still so very well done and portrayed on film. True, Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney gives a masterful performances as John and Abigal Adams, and the rest of the casting is spot on, but this is the second HBO films production (the first Being Band of Brothers) that seem to be done with actual respect and reverence to the topic and intent on illuminating the true essence and urgency of the turbulent times before, during and even after the American Revolution. The Harrowing images of war, Washington's pessimism, Adams' struggle to be heard and sway congress to Independence is strongly felt and a sense of frustration and urgency is felt just as the relief and joy is felt during the outcome. The viewer is truly drawn in for the full experience and not just mere observation.

Of course it helps that the Author, David Mccullough was on hand every step of the way from development to the actual filming and that the Director, Tom Hooper and his team of make-up artists, costumers, set designers and even his CGI team aimed to produce as brilliantly authentic production as possible. The care and craft of this production is so well and beautifully done that every award for this program is so very much deserved.

This is best for viewers who already know well the history of the period, as the movie doesn't take time to explain the events that are often the backdrops to the scenes. For viewers who are not trying to learn the history for the first time, this video will provide a rich feeling for what it was actually like to live it, a better (more realistic and more human) representation of the lives of these people than any other I've seen. At times it can be slow, particularly if you are more interested in the historical events than in living with these people. The depiction of revolutionary Boston is wonderful, One of the movies great moments is the interchange between Adams and King George, when Adams is presented as America's first ambassador to England.

Goes into quite a bit of depth. There are times it seems a bit slow, but one can truly appreciate what John Adams went through.
He allows his son to leave to go to another country (when the boy was 14 years old -- what a different time then!), then doesn't see his son again until the fellow is in his 20s. He's also separated from his wife for YEARS. This really takes a considerable amount of sacrifice, courage and conviction.

We cannot appreciate some of the tougher aspects of their lives...John Adams gets sick for MONTHS, and there's no medicine but what his body can do for him. He pays a dear price for doing service to his country.

The series appears very realistic, well done with all the minor details...depicting how the French wore makeup to cover up their infrequent bathing. How the royal court lived - so opulently while the poor live very poorly.

For those who are history buffs, you should like it. FOR THOSE WHO WANT A QUICKIE PEEK BACK, and don't want the details, this series might provide too much information, and move too slowly for you.

For anyone interested in the history of the US republic during the formative years of the revolution, this is highly recommended. Provides a good contextual framework for some of the political dynamics playing of during this period within the elite ruling political circles of the times. Also offers a helpful perspective on the internal power struggles and early political maneuverings which led to the Federalist -vs Anti-Federalists, although it does a poor job of really getting into the substance of these debates.

Pair this with the 6-part PBS series Liberty! and you have a good foundation for an introduction to American Politics course of high school or undergrad students, as well as the general public. Episodes are just short enough to keep your interest, but run a little long for typical classroom use. The episodes dealing with the early Boston Tea Party context (Ep 1) and the Alien and Sedition Acts under the early republic (Ep 5) were especially good.

Amazing Actors! "Abigail" has the most beautiful smiles! I really enjoyed the nutshell version of what happened in our early history surrounding the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the early fathers, and John Adam's non-compromising positions. He is like me, wanting to come to the point and being direct rather than look for the most diplomatic way to approach things. It is nice seeing Paul Giamatti in this role after having known of him only because of his Century Link commercials. He is wonderful with how he uses his eyes! The dialogue is interesting and the writers did a really good job with that. It illustrates well how much children can suffer from dad being gone too much. There is so much more praise I could give the series. Now I want to read the book upon which it is based. Ok, so some of the story isn't exactly as the history of it, but that is poetic license. If it makes the story interesting, so be it. If I could give it 10 stars I'd give it 15.

Absolutely wonderful storytelling. This series is a masterpiece. Chronicling the life of the man who is John Adams. Not just his political life but his family life as well. We follow him through his career as a lawyer, diplomat days and of course as Vice- President and President. This is how history should be presented. There is a lot of drama in this series but also enough humor to keep it realistic. I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves history and desires to know more of the accounts of our founding fathers. I would also recommend it to those who might not enjoy history, because i believe that the way this series is presented, will entertain as well as educate the viewer.

An interesting seven part series about the diplomatic struggle and subsequent war between America and Great Britain starting in the late 18th century and stretching into the Napoleonic era of the early 1800's.
Certainly most American school children will have this story imprinted in their minds at an early age.
But for me this was a fascinating way to learn about the background of those times. My only complaint about this production is the lack of action throughout its 500 minutes for which I deduct one star--- there were no battle scenes to speak of either on land or sea and the only musket fired was by John Adams from a ship at another distant ship!

Having said that, the acting was absorbing throughout especially by the superb Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney as Adams and his wife, Abigail. Their scenes together were sometimes funny and often very touching from start to finish.
Also worth mentioning are the performances by the British acting pair Stephen Dillane and Tom Wilkinson as Tom Jefferson and Ben Franklin respectively.

A solid telling of the pre united states of America as they tentatively boxed above their weight against the established might of Great Britain and France.
My copy is the Region 1 version which has English subtitles which I hardly used as the diction of most of the actors was spot on.

HBO make some of the best TV drama's. Band Of Brothers: Complete HBO Series (Commemorative 6-Disc Gift Set In Tin Box) [DVD ], Rome - Season 1-2 - Complete [DVD] [2005 ], Deadwood : Complete HBO Seasons 1-3 (12 Disc Box Set) [DVD] [2004 ], Boardwalk Empire, etc. For some reason John Adams sort of slipped through the net here (I believe it was shown on channel 4 in 2008), maybe due to the fact that it is American history & not so much ours. John Adams is a 7 part mini-series totalling around 8 hours which when released in America broke the record for most emmy wins in a mini-series (13 out of 23 nominations).

Despite this not being as big or popular as Band of Brothers here in the UK this series is just as unmissable. Paul Giamatti puts in a phenomenal performance as the 2nd President of the United States of America. Starting in the years preceding the wars of independence as a Boston Lawyer, John Adams rises to become one of the leaders of the American revolution alongside General George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, etc. Also look out for Tom Wilkinson who is excellent as Ben Franklin.

The story focuses mainly on Adams' part in the revolution so we don't see much of the wars going on as Adams was in France at the time. Throughout the series though we see Adams' viewpoint at the turning of a new era for America. From the years preceding the revolution to Washington's presidency (& Adamas vice-presidency), Adams' own presidency, Jefferson's presidency, & Adams's retirement. The series concludes with the 50th anniversary of the independence and a poignant moment for Adams as he comes to realise that he & Jefferson are the last of the revolutionaries alive & the two former rivals become friends.

There are some touching moments along the way. Two of Adams' children die before him, so does his beloved wife Abigail (an equally excellent Laura Linney) in the final part. The main cast play the roles excellent & despite a large timescale (around 50+ years) it remains convincing as they are aged so well by the make up department!

The production is top notch as expected with a HBO mini-series. Sets, costumes & characters all look exactly as they should. The blu-ray set (which is REGION-FREE) is almost demo quality. Detail is a massive upgrade from the DVD. Both the DVD & blu-ray also include an optional historical text ("facts are stubborn things") which helps to fill in gaps if you are not too clued up on your 18th century history!

An excellent series that I implore you to take a look at! Also worth noting that the Director (Tom Hooper) is now the academy award winning director of The King's Speech [DVD] [2010 ].
