This book provides an interesting look at the life of one of America's most important and controversial labor leaders. A tireless advocate for traditionally overlooked workers (particularly coal miners) Lewis was lauded as a hero by many of them. His call for coal strikes in the midst of World War Two, however, transformed him into a villain in the eyes of many Americans. Lewis would live to see the power of labor curtailed by Congressional legislation but his work would inspire many subsequent labor movements.

Numerous negative characterizations of John L. Lewis; check out the adjectives. The spin the authors put on him is all wrong. I grew up in John L. Lewis territory and everybody, but everybody, loved him, except the mine owners, of course. He was totally devoted to improving the welfare of the miners and their families and he did! This man stood up to power. I've ordered the other biography and hope the author is bit more accurate and kinder in his descriptions and characterizations of Mr. Lewis.
