I am a poet and painter, and was formerly a teacher. I was born in Norfolk, England. I have joked that I grew up in the American West. I also tell of attending, on Saturday mornings, the flea-pit cinema in the nearest small town, which is where HALO probably had its inception. JUSTLY WADING was my original working-title for the book that was published as HALO,and I am delighted to be able to restore it for the Kindle edition. Among the reviews I liked most was that from the Californian librarian David Dodd, beginning, " HALO surpasses most Western fiction on this side of the Atlantic by somehow transcending its own setting." I hope that the restored title will help more readers to see the book as using the West as a setting for a love story. It is a love story about several kinds of love. As HALO, it won the McKitterick Prize and the David Higham Award.
Also set in the West, GOODBYE,BUFFALO SKY, winner of the Best Children's Book Award (of the Writers' Guild of Great Britain), was commissioned by Barry Cunningham after he had read HALO (this, shortly before he became the editor now known as the man who accepted the first of the Harry Potter books. I like to quote the words Barry wrote for the cover of my book: "Like KES or SHANE, it strikes home hard with youth's own voice." We both regard it as a book adults too can enjoy.
