I've only played once so far because it takes a little over two hours to play if you've got good opponents. Normal chess is like "how can I manuever around this person while avoiding their attacks" while this is like "I'm in the center of chaos". If you aren't watching everything, every second, you're done for. One person I was playing with had another person's queen surrounded with 2 of his own knights and a knight he had captured, and player 2 went to move his queen towards a king, paying acute attention to whether he would put himself in a spot where any of those three knights could kill him. He took his fingers off his queen finally, after determining he was safe, and I killed him with a pawn. This game is intense, I love it.

Let me break this down to different parts:

The Chess Pieces:
1. Size is perfect
2. Design & looks are interesting & yet recognizable.
3. Color is good
4. Although it's plastic, the weight is still ok, it can sit still on the board.

The Board:
1. Nice durable & sturdy carton.
2. Can be folded into quarter of its size.
3. The seams are not noticeable when you unfold it.
4. The design looks good except the artwork on each square that's sometimes giving me the dizzy feeling when i look at it for too long.

The Game:
This is the best feature of this product - i've been playing Chess for over 30 years & the concept of this game is G-R-E-A-T...just like the description on the box- it's not just a game, it's a WAR! I suggest that you may want to revised the rule just like what other reviewers had mentioned esp when a player conquered a "kingdom". And since this could be a great game for a party, I'm planning to create my own version of this game with larger pieces & not so dizzy game board. I already ordered a Staunton Chess pieces which of course will come in Black & white; then I will order another similar set & will dye it with a different color like Gold & Silver. I recommend this to anyone who is a Chess afficionado, not for novice peeps. Hope this helps...I'm getting one for my Chess Buddy who lives in Australia!

A Kid's Review on November 13, 2007
I tried this game with 3 other people and it is totally awesome!! As soon as you checkmate someone, you get to control all of their pieces! As you can infer, it gets very good with only 2 people left, each controlling 2 chess sets. Overall, this game is the bomb. The best part is being able to play 2-4 people at once.

Seirawan chess was developed by a chess grand master in order to make the game more accessible to new and weaker players. There are only so many times that you can hear the phrase 'its only a game' from a strong player who regularly wipes the floor with you. So, in order to 'upset the apple-cart' as it were the approach has been to add in extra pieces. Its a valid approach I suppose and there are many chess variants that have tried similar approaches (including big bang theory sheldons' serpent and old lady :) Another way, which I prefer is to keep the pieces and moves of regular chess but change the topology of the board. ie not playing on an 8 by 8 grid. This is the effect that chess4 has in accomodating 4 players. To begin with there is a lot of open ground to cover in order to attack but moving a piece exposes your army to long range attacks from surprising directions. This makes the game much more equitable in that strong players can't rely on established patterns. Its fun and a bit more chaotic. I think that this is a good way to get the whole family playing chess and include new players.

I got this as a gift for a friend. He's a chess lover and, as a high school student, he and his friend (currently my neighbor) started a chess club together. I'd told him about the existence of 4-Way Chess and he'd been really excited, so I got this as a surprise. When he opened it, he was excited and I said, "Wait for him to realize..." and then the manliest scream I've ever heard as he figured it out. He and his friend that started chess club all those years ago then immediately opened it and played it. They said they enjoyed it a lot, and for that it's more than worth the price. Rated four for plastic piece -- though, neither of the boys seemed that bothered by it. It's just a fact that irks me myself. Since I didn't watch, I don't know how weighted they are as far as game-play, but I still worry about how easy the pieces would be to break. Still a good purchase and a cheap one if you just want the basics and can't afford a slightly better package. Do recommend.

Many arguments and much fun is to be had in the coming months. With my family of four competitive chess lovers I can tell you that this experience could be compared to a game of monopoly. It will be loud, bloody, and possibly take weeks to finish.
In our first game we had a huge debate on directional changes for the pawn depending on the army said pawn is placed in front of.
My father (to my left) had moved a pawn forward into my mothers (directly across from me) territory and then on his next turn moved that same pawn toward the rooks starting tile. This sparked the debate.
My brother (to my right) insisted that he couldn't move that way because from his position (directly across from my dad) it looked like he moved the pawn backwards which everyone knows you can't do. My dad argued that because his pawn was in front of my mothers army that it essentially could allow the pawns "backwards" to be in either his direction or mine. My brain exploded, how 'bout yours?

Anyway, shipping was fast and the price is good for what you're getting :)
