The following article is from Tips to Writers from a Book Publisher. See if it gives you ideas for speeding up the creation of your next book project; by putting on paper a more specific idea of what you are after, your goal will be more clear to you.
Describing the Ideal Product
So what kind of book do you want to write? Would it help us as writers if we clearly define the book we are attempting to write? At least generate a few characteristics that make the book worth creating?
Since I am currently pretty heavily involved with nonfiction, here are some ideas to brainstorm about…
Well written: does the copy flow from idea to idea in a logical manner, and perhaps be at least mildly entertaining?
Has the book been well researched? Are the facts valid and true?
Does the book keep reader attention? Are the ideas helpful or original?
Is the book well organized, in a way where a reader can later revisit an idea or section that proved worthwhile in starting?
Has the book been carefully proofread, and is now totally free of typos?
Is the book formatted properly and do graphics on the inside of the book further understanding or hinder readability?
Does the cover meet these requirements?
Informative on the back cover, giving a good taste for the book without revealing too much?
Is there author biographical data that piques interest?
About the title:
Is it effective?
Have you made sure, by using Internet searches and perhaps contacting your local reference librarian, that the title has not been used as a book title by somebody else?
If someone has used that title, think of something similar but not repetitive in the marketplace. You don’t want people to do a search for your book and find something completely different.
Always use a subtitle that further explains the book in an original way, or at least in a brief way. After reading your title and subtitle, the reader should know what the book is about and have no qualms.
Does the back of the book contain a description or history of the author?
You might consider giving a brief list of your other products you would like to sell and tell readers how they can purchase them. If you only give information on the copyright page, they are going to have to write you to find out about purchasing the book or at least do an Internet search—what a waste of time for all parties. How are they, for example, to know how much to send for shipping and sales tax, which you will tell them in the back of the book?
If you have a website and social media contacts, this is the place to put them.
Having been a publisher for decades, I am no longer shy about telling people what I have for sale. Does a grocery store or department store make their products hard to sell by not giving prices or not putting all of one kind of product in the same area?
I hope I have given you at least a few ideas to work on.

More about his works...
His works for children include Two Stories for Children: Betty Blooper Is Super! and Hands Holding Heaven, which has been made into a Kindle eBook for only $2.99. You and God Together, Friends Forever is a marvelous introduction to the concept of God and how we know He is love, and real. ($6.00)
Mr. Turtle's Award is a storybook about inner and world peace, adapted into a play, The Year of Mr. Turtle, which has been published by Stageplays.com. Works for adults include My Visit to the Kingdom of God, based on a remarkable vision in which John was shown the Kingdom that God planned for us at the foundation of the world. A true vision of our future, if we allow it to happen, the book will change your life, allowing you to release all sorrows concerning our present world and get excited about a marvelous world beyond our current imagination. As a reviewer said to John in a telephone conversation, "The Kingdom of God—you have been there!" ($13.99)

Foreword or Preface
Having in all my years never quite understood the difference between a foreword and a preface, I will now write both simultaneously, settling the issue forever.
Humor is the spice of life and just as a grand meal expertly selected and carefully planned is only food until the addition of a few select spices here or there, a good book must also whet the appetite for the next satisfyingly delicious punch line. Thus, I hope your time spent with this book will both satisfy and delight you.
To the best of my knowledge all jokes are original, but as someone once said, “jokes are like dogs; sometimes you hear one that sounds a lot like one you’ve already heard.”
Critics of this work may ask why the poems and short prose are not logically organized. There are three good reasons and one not so good:
1. Diverse collections of fine literary works do not easily lend themselves to logic or organization.
2. Humor is most appreciated when surprising and unexpected.
3. Literary journeys are planned best by the reader, not prearranged by a writer or an editor.
4. Simple laziness.
Thus I have concluded this formative part of the book and leave you to your journey. In the end, I hope you will have enjoyed the trip, laughing along the way, or at least chuckling. Sharing humor with friends is a prized gift; I hope you’ll share this gift with yours.
Samples from the work…
Q: What do you call a person with bad
posture who watches too much TV?
A: A slouch potato.
The average American family has 2.3 children.
It’s the .3 child that is hard to raise.
Sign on a business’ wall:
“This company does not discriminate
on the basis of sex, race, age, religion
or intelligence. That’s why I have a job.”
Q. When parents have small children they are the chief caregivers. When the children are teenagers the parents are what?
A. Chief car-givers.
It’s only $2.99. That’s less than a dessert at a restaurant. And you won’t gain any weight.
What if you could visit life on Earth in the year 2350? Because our future is based on probabilities, I believe that our future is at least somewhat knowable. And I also believe in divine revelation, that God is alive and wants to show us a wonderful new civilization that can be built in the next hundred years. This way, we can be optimistic about our future no matter what is currently happening in the world.
What you will gain from this book…
• Peace of mind—far less worry about the current world because You know that a new day is dawning in the history of mankind.
• Marvelous ideas about new technologies and ways of living that are not available from any other source.
• A spiritual revelation in which you will see that marvelous human growth is very possible.
