This could be a good first choice for someone looking to try the music of John Tavener. Most of the selections are available on other CDs. However, it contains two or three comparative rarities -- "The Uncreated Eros," a setting of Genesis 2:21-23, 25, which has a quality of hushed mystery, and a setting of George Herbert's "Love Bade Me Welcome" (which Ralph Vaughan Williams also set to music, including it in the Five Mystical Songs). I have around 20 Tavener CDs, and this is one of the ones I turn to most often.

Some nice pieces, but not extraordinary performances. A much more beautiful and radiant performance of "The Lamb" is by the boys choir "Libera" on their album "New Dawn". An even more exquisite performance by Libera of a John Tavener piece is their "Mother of God" on the album "Eternal: The Best of Libera"

Two of Tavener's best short choral pieces--"The Lord's Prayer" (1999) and "As One Who Has Slept" (1996)--are not here but even if they had been, i very much doubt that a performance of them by this group would come anywhere near the stellar performances by Anonymous4 on their album "Darkness Into Light".
