The Johnny B. Fast series was written as a response to the "cookie cutter" formula in stories that I have seen cropping up with more and more regularity. These types of stories often have the hero go out on a grand adventure, defeat his or her rivals, and ride off into the sunset, so to speak, without much left to worry about in the end.

What the stories were missing, in my mind, were growth and consequence.

While Johnny B. Fast is a series surrounded by wondrous gadgets and larger than life characters, at its core there is an undercurrent of thematic issues important and prevalent in our daily lives: trust, courage, responsibility, overcoming adversity, doing the right thing.

The characters aren't always brave, they don't always know what to do. They fail, a lot, and get knocked down. They aren't perfect cookie cutter heroes going off on meaningless by-the-numbers adventures.

There is growth, and there are consequences to their actions. It's a big story, with a very far reaching vision. Parts 1-3 add up to just over 110,000 words, and we haven't even finished getting out of the first act of the adventure. Seeds are planted throughout, and weeds, that fester and grow as the story progresses.

I wish I could tell you all right now where the story is going. It's a bigger adventure than I originally intended. Suffice it to say that characters die, others go bad, and some go good. Some are able to redeem themselves, and others stumble under the burden of betraying past responsibilities.

Johnny and Nancy may or may not end up together, but they do grow, and they do face the consequences of their adventure.

These are the types of stories I feel really matter.

This is verging on a "five star" book if you get it for free. If you have to pay for it, its probably about a three and a half. I read it to my seven year old twins and they LOVED most of it .. there is lots of technological gadgetry and fantastic combat scenes that are a fun, playful mix of superheros, transformers and James Bondish gizmos. But there are also boring patches in this book - the father's dull work described in excruciating detail and a school detention chapter - what on earth is that there for? The romantic banter tends to be flogged and explained far too much.

Overall I kept thinking what tremendous potential - give this to a good editor, cut out the dead bits you have not only a great book, but a good movie to follow.

My eight year old son loved this 1/2 a story (that's what this is - you need part two to get a "whole" story). Don't go into it expecting deep emotional development, and you won't be disappointed. This isn't "The Color Purple." It's a slapstick, straight out romp where the victory of the superspy, the duplicty of his teammates, and the insanity of the gadgets is always assured. You won't find Snape killing Dumbledore. You'll often find the author flat out stating things that are also told in the narrative. My son didn't care.

My primary gripe is that it is only part of a story.

The first thing I thought when I got this book was "This book is for 7 year olds." The writing is good enough, but the vocabulary level is very low, and the characters, though they are supposed to be high school aged, are definitely childish. Plus, this book is only half a book, with 5 chapters and the end being is the middle of a large event story wise, and forces you to pay for the next book if you want to finish the story line.

Although Super Spy 2 and 3 carry a small price tag, this particular kindle book, I believe, was free and evidently good reading. It certainly garnered my 11-year-old grandson's attention...and although he's a very good reader, he doesn't care for just any book; it has to have some substance to it.

He quickly read it, so I downloaded Super Spy 2 and later Super Spy 3. My grandson gave the series a good rating. The very fact that he read all three books says something good about the series.

BOTTOM LINE: This book (this entire series!) will probably hold the attention of your young readers. And if it gets them reading, it's money well spent.
