Based on an incredible true story, JOHNNY FRANK GARRETT'S LAST WORD is a terrifying tale of vengeance from beyond the grave. On Halloween night 1981, a Catholic nun is savagely murdered. In a haze of fear, the authorities in Amarillo, Texas feel compelled to solve the case quickly amidst widespread panic and lynch mob anger. Soon a suspect emerges as 18-year-old Johnny Frank Garrett is arrested and put on trial. Overlooking evidence that could have cleared his name, the jury passes swift judgment and Garrett is convicted and sentenced to death. But from the moment of his arrest until his last breath Garrett professes his innocence, and following his execution a letter is found in his cell written in a voice driven by a dark force, promising retribution and cursing the souls of anyone connected with his demise. Character development was non existent. The wife was a cartoon. Worst of all, this movie was not at all scary.
Why couldn't we just see what really happened?
The best part of the movie was the first 5 minutes, which were truly disturbing. After that large amounts of schlock were applied. Less would have been more. I guess the director was going for the cheap thrills instead making a very tense, horrifying movie based on the facts. I think I'll just read the book.
This sort of thing happens a lot more than we like to admit. And that's the most terrifying thing.
Now for the film itself :
The weird lighting was unnecessary and tried to make it look like the film was shot in the 70s or something. Very strange. The music in the background was annoying. And that's the kindest thing I can say about it. The jerkily shot flashbacks and cut shots made it visually difficult to watch. In my opinion, the cinematography itself was very poor.
Growing up in a small town in Texas and having even smaller towns around us, we all knew of "local justice" and many have seen it first hand. Where a tight group of the local yolkles will be the voice of the masses and when something happens they will do whatever it takes to hush the gossip and negative and or panic.
If that means grabbing a troubled kid or some wanderer or undocumented person to pin the chaos on in order to keep order, so be it. As long as they have someone to direct the chaos at, at any cost.
Sad that Johnny Garrett had to be their scapegoat. I can totally see the people in Amarillo blaming any misfortune to anyone living there on The Johnny Garrett curse though.
Maybe that "curse" was frightening enough to make them do a better job at getting the correct bad guy, but I doubt it.
I would have swapped out the PA for someone who looked less like Adam. Other than those two issues, I was captured by the story and felt a bit of "The Ring" ish.
