Hard truths

To me this story is like telling my own experiences. Something not this bad happened to my son in 2011, and it changed my outlook fore ever. We were lucky in some aspects; nobody died.
I'm glad I read it.
Not for those who have never witnessed this kind of thing, maybe. To some, it will seen like a far fetched tale of impossible madness.
Unfortunately, it is so close to things that really happen.
I can't say any more. It is too painful.

The author of Johnny and Jamaal has a timely message for us all. Breakey explains that he was raised in Vancouver where diversity was the rule and he wrote this book with the hope that "it spawns healthy discussion[s]." In this book, the author examines the lives of two promising up and coming athletes, one white and the other black. When tempers flare and a mob mentality grips one boy and he gets into trouble, should we look the other way? When one had steadfastly avoided trouble while excelling in athletics and academics, yet makes a single tragic mistake, do we use it to ruin that boy's life, and his chances to become all that he has been working for? Reading this book is not only about two athletes, but it is thought-provoking too.

Typical black turns good at end, maybe?

Bought this book for my Kindle and finally read it last week. I got it a year ago and just kept putting off reading it. Maybe it was the cover that showed a white hockey player and your run of the mill black, playing about the only game the black is good at. I give this so called book one star because I can't give it one lower. I don't blame the author as he has other books under his name and I will try to read them. I will give him the benefit of a doubt. The subjects live in two different worlds, and in different countries. Their meeting is by accident fairly early in the book and the result is the usual death of a white boy by a group of feral blacks living in a mostly black area when the white boy from Canada, a white couple and a black girl that has taken a shine to Johnny, fine themselves between a rock and a hard place. Both are rising stars in the sport they are good at, and their futures seem bright. The white boy doesn't or isn't shown to be privileged or racist. But on the other hand the black, jamaal is a true to the bone racist and hater of the white race. While trying to get away from a black gang the group of four wanting to get a cab to escape come upon jamaal and his brain damaged buddy. They have nowhere to run and are trapped. An ensuing fight between the white and the black develops into a murderous beating of the white boy by the blacks more so by jamaal that the white boy called out and asked for a one on one fight, which the black begins to lose and the blacks begin the brutal attack on Johnny. He dies as the result of mobs violence that is finished by jamaal and the others kicking and stomping the white boy to death in only the way blacks are known for. There is reference to Colin Flaherty and his Youtube site and his books about black on white violence. I have read his books also and as of now his Youtube site is no more. Through out the book there is a love affair between Johnnys best friend and a black girl. The usual decet and denial by the mayor, chief of police and other politicals on both sides that try their hardest to make the white boy the antaginest and the poor up and coming black boy just defending himself againest a white racist. Until a police detective, trying his best to get justice done fines a video that proves that Johnny is not as the black community and the media describe him to be. Anyway this type goes back and forth. Until it appears that after a black speaker of black violence should be stopped and is assassinated after giving a moving speech, by jamaal's drugged friend, that just so happens to be a Vet. with PTSD. The crowd runs and johnny's best friend and his black girlfriend are rescued by a white councilman only to be caught by a mob of rioters and jamml,s blood lust after watching the killing of the "MLK" type goes out to see what up. He has some kind of epiphany and rescues Johnny's friend and his black girlfriend. In the end there are no charges the instigators of the murder of Johnny and the MLK subject go uncharged and simple changes seem to make the family of Johnny and his friends get over his murder. jamaal gets a slap on the wrist the agonizing ebonics spoken by the blacks and written by the author is a pain to try and decipher.

This book describes, in technicolor detail, a scenario which could play out in any major city in today's volatile politically charged atmosphere. For the most part, I liked the characters, but there were a couple I did not like....at first. However, as human nature can often do, the characters themselves had small transformations of a sort which led them to great introspect. The "villain" so to speak who was involved in a heinous crime was a distasteful character, but, after some soul searching, he began to actually like his "real" self a better and, as a consequence of this, I, too, began to empathize with him and find him salvageable.

first K.M. Breakey book I came across and would highly recommend it.. fiction but could easy be true. K.M. Breakey write a story of everyday people who find themselves in black/white conflict they never expected but had to face head on. The Canadian twist to the story works well in light of Canada's growing race problem awareness.

After reading this I read K.M. Breakey's second book "creator class" ... another book that should be on your must read list.

Definitely a good read. The topic of race if often a very controversial one, I found the author approached it in a way that was a bit eye opening for me. I liked that there was a type of solution offered, a different way of thinking about our society and race. It made me question some of my own thinking and how I feel. I didn’t like all the characters but I think that was needed. They were certainly very real and a good reminder that there are people out there who are more extreme than I am exposed to. I certainly wanted to keep reading, and found myself making time so I could finish it.

Breakey makes you think forever differently about the big things - beliefs, fears, motives, acceptance, cruelty and kindness.

The author's writing style is engaging and easily draws the reader into the story. That said, the topic is far from easy and its certainly not your typical sports story! It is bold, full of conflict, and has unexpected twists and turns that keep the pages turning! Timely and relevant, the book addresses the complex matter of race delivered effectively through compelling characters navigating a well developed storyline, set on a very current backdrop.

I found Johnny and Jamaal to be interesting, educational, and certainly thought provoking. The events of today and references to yesteryear are woven throughout the story, lending an authenticity to the narrative. This novel would be a fantastic book-club selection as it certainly gives the reader much to think about!

While the author's political tendencies are evident, the novel presents a balanced approach and a call to action for everyone, regardless of race. These messages are conveyed primarily through the character Wilbur Rufus Holmes. His message is delivered beautifully as he encourages his audiences to "Keep your minds open and your hearts pure"

A compelling novel, realistic and ultimately hopeful. This is a novel that you'll devour, then ponder for a time afterwards as it can't help but stay with you.
