THE STORY: This wonderful Walt Disney film is the civil war adventure/historical drama loosely based on the true story of Johnny Clem, the Drummer Boy of Chickamauga. They call the film Johnny Shiloh due to the Shiloh battle in the movie. In the film, it is 1861 and little Johnny Clem has run away to become a drummer boy at the age of 10 for the "Blue Marauders" platoon of the Union Army. He can't stand them going to war without him since he has drilled with them as their mascot drummer in his home town for so long before getting their orders move out. He is too young to serve at 10 and he is returned home, only to run back again. The next strategy of the union army is to wear him down by treating him like a real soldier, but his heart just won't give up. He is allowed to stay on as a real drummer. After showing incredible bravery on the battlefield as a drummer during a fierce battle, and saving his seargents life by shooting a confederate officer that is about to strike him down, Johnny gets promoted to a sergeant and assigned as a messenger to for the general. He is captured by the confederates and must escape to deliver valuable information to his general that could affect the outcome of the next big battle.

BEHIND THE SCENES & TRIVIA: The true story of Johnny Clem is exciting enough, and well worth reading about. Disney naturally made some Hollywood changes to the original story and it sticks to only about 2 years of his life. It is based on the non-fiction book by James A. Rhodes and Dean Jauchius. Jonny became a career officer in real life, retiring as a brigadier general in 1916, and passed on in 1937. He really was injured on the battlefield twice, captured by confederates, and promoted to sergeant by 12 years of age.

Here is a historical novel in a movie about a real boy during the Civil War. There was a real alive boy named Johnny Clem, who served as a drummer boy, and as a courier for the Northern Army. The Disney organization was master at portraying genuine historical characters, and this DVD is no exception. I have been to historical sites in Nashville Tennessee, and the Stones River
historical battlefield, where Johnny Clem, later nicknamed, Johnny Shiloh, served. Kevin Corcoran acted as 11 year old Johnny Clem, as well as Eddy Hodges who acted as a young boy in the Army of the South. The cast is full of surprises for actors in this production. This movie presents the realities of the civil war from the eyes of young boys, and the positive aspects of duty and honor, which I had an appreciation for as a young 1st Class Boy Scout when I first viewed this in my youth. This a good family movie, and worth the cost to have it in my collection.

This is a wonderful classic Disney movie. Love, love, love it! My 7 year old girl and 3 year old boy both love it too. The quality of the DVD was great and we will enjoy this movie over and over again. It has a great message and tells the story of history as only Disney can do. I highly recommend this movie for the great story and got exactly what I expected upon purchasing it!

I've been looking for this on DVD for 10 years, and on VHS for another 10 before that. I saw it once, somewhere... and had always wanted to watch again. This was a wonderful old Disney movie. I wish they'd make more like today. I would recommend this to everyone as a wonderful family movie.

This is one of the few movies I remembered from Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Disney. I was happy it finally became available on DVD. This was based on a true story, and I will now have to find a book about "Johnny Shiloh". It's too bad they didn't have any "extras" on the DVD.

I am prejudice about this movie because Johnny is my so many greats (three to five) uncle. I don't think that the movie is exactly historically correct. First they never brought out so many facts; like he changed the spelling of his last name from Klem to Clem, so he wouldn't be discriminated against by the army because he was German. Also, his greatest act was never brought out and that is the fact that he was made a drummer boy because he was under age and in the midst of the battle he put down his drums and picked up a gun and fought in the middle of the worst of it and that he saved many lives performing multiple daring acts to do so. I never heard the story of him being captured and later escaping; I suspect that was all hollywood. He joined because his brothers were all signed up and he wanted to fight too. I could go on and on, but if Disney wanted to do him justice, they could put out a far superior production if they redid it and told the truth about his life. He had an interesting childhood too due to his personality.

I believe that his TV movie made by Walt Disney in the early 60's sealed my love of history and the American Civil War. Even though I see it now and it is a little old of me, it still brings back those memories of my youth. Walt Disney was a big history fan and a Civil War fan to boot. When I visited Arlington Cemetery in the late 1970's, my cousin and I walked its hallowed grounds and I found the resting place of Johnny Shiloh!
