Johnson's Self-leveling Leveling Rotary Laser System is designed for accomplished homeowners and accomplished tradesmen working both indoors and outdoors. Preparing this rotary laser level for use is easy - simply unlock the transportation lock and turn it on and the laser levels itself in both the X or Y axis. This rotary laser projects a red beam of light 360. Its versatility allows for three rotational speeds of 200, 400 & 600 RPM. Slower rotational speeds enhance beam visibility while the higher speed is preferred for outdoor use with a detector. For maximum versatility this rotary laser can be used horizontally or vertically. In the horizontal plane the laser is self-leveling and in vertical applications it is manually leveled. The durable high-impact composite housing is Jobsite Tough. For outdoor use this rotary laser includes a red beam laser detector with a grade rod and grade rod mounting bracket. The lasers' split beam feature establishes a 90Degree angle. The enclosed beacon protects inner mechanism from water and dirt. Illuminated vial for easy vertical set-up. Integrated vertical bracket for vertical applications. This laser system includes: 4 "AA" alkaline batteries, tinted laser beam enhancement glasses, soft-sided carrying case, instruction manual, aluminum tripod, 13 ft. aluminum grade rod, detector with 2 "AAA" alkaline batteries and clamp, wall/ceiling mount.
Top Customer Reviews
My primary buying concern was to get all the necessary pieces for a complete system in one purchase. Initially, I was planning to buy a used system off Craigslist but decided instead I didn't want a hodge-podge system.
My one request of Johnson is that I could buy a larger case that would carry perhaps everything but the pole or the tripod. One more - none of the barcodes on the product literature led to the promised video described on each. Maybe this was a momentary glitch but it certainly didn't work on my attempted.
Regardless, the system was easily understood and setup straight out of the box. So far, I'm a fan!
************One Year Update**********
And one year later...I still love this thing. It has performed flawlessly for me and earlier this week I took a picture to give you an idea of the range of the laser. You can't really see the tripod but it is sitting next to my white Tundra on the upper right side of the image. It is sending a signal out to the receiver and I'm confident I could have moved at least another 50 to 100 feet away from the transmitter. I estimate this distance at about 400 feet.
Since buying this product I've found countless uses for it. Now I can verify anything that requires elevations. I have never used one and was worried about the learning curve. I was able to basically use it right out of the box. A few YouTube videos helped get me started.
The whole kit seems like quality products. Personally I really don't use the stick too much, as a basic survey stake and tape works better for me. But it was part of the kit and I will no doubt use it more in the future.
I can't imagine this not working great for anyone from basic to seasoned vets.
-Easy to operate (mostly)
-Complete kit with useful accessories
-Nice rod, pro-quality tripod
-The sensor clamp needs some help. The hard edges scratched the paint on the rod. I ended up putting tape on it to protect the rod. Moving the sensor up and down the rod is a two-handed operation - very awkward when you are carrying a clipboard when shooting elevations. I attached some Velcro fuzz to the inside edges of the clamp so it could loosely grip the rod and still slide up and down without falling off. It would have been nice if more thought had been put into the clamp's design.
-The rod is nice, being calibrated in architectural and engineering scales, snaps tightly into place, and comes with a dandy bubble level and replacement locking button, but the paint scratches off VERY easily. Definitely keep it in the provided sleeve or it will not last long.
-The case for the laser is adequate, but is not designed to accommodate the sensor and clamp. I was able to squeeze these in by removing the molded rubber padding from inside the lid, wrapping them in a thin sheet of foam rubber for at least a little protection.
-The instructions for calibration need re-writing. Apparently they switched from a slotted set screw (as described in the manual) to a hex screw (what is actually there). Took me a bit to figure this out. Some guidance on which direction and how much to turn the set screw would have been helpful, but the user is left to trial and error on this. VERY glad the Y-axis did not need adjusting, as this requires removal of the batteries.
Overall I am VERY happy with this unit. It performed flawlessly the first trip out, and I expect it will serve my purposes well in years to come. Highly recommended!
It does work well for now but we will see how it holds up over time.
If i had to buy this again i would go for the more expensive one that i know is more for the construction worker.
probably a great tool for the weekend warrior!
Level Kit. It came in one box. Inside that box were all the items in seperate boxes.
Packaged very well. Directions for use was well included and well written.
Batteries included! Used it to Level 28 each Piling for my wife's New Barn. She loves her Cows. It's so helpful, it was like having a second Wife. I am glad I spent the money for this Great item !
