> What I do is (after showering other body parts), I uncap the travel size baby shampoo; place my finger over top (sealing it), invert the bottle for a few seconds -- just to "wet" my finger tip with a thin coating of shampoo; then I upright the bottle and set it aside; and then rub my eyelids for 10--15 seconds with the tiny amount of baby shampoo on my fingertip and rinse. You only need a very tiny amount of baby shampoo. After using a (travel size) bottle daily for a month, it still looks like an unopened bottle.
> NOTE Oddly, when you upend a bottle on your fingertip, it takes a few seconds for the shampoo to "get a grip" on your fingertip. So, you have to upend, and hold that position for 2 or 3 seconds.
> Many people complain that baby shampoo is too harsh for cleaning eyelids (to reduce dry-eye)---but they are probably using way too much shampoo. I've seen many recommendations about how to dilute baby shampoo way down for this purpose. But, in fact, you don't have to dilute it -- instead just use a very little bit. The travel size bottle makes this easy (because it delivers exactly the right amount to your fingertip, if used as I describe above).
> Just in case it isn't obvious, you keep your eyes CLOSED, and just message the outside of your eyelids -- albeit, paying more attention to the edges of your (closed) top and bottom eyelids. I'm a bit unclear why this works (at least for a geezer like me who does NOT wear eye makeup, has NEVER worn eye makeup), since the tear ducts are on the inside edges of your eyelid. My bet is that the "active ingredient" is actually just the massaging of your eyelids -- and the soap works more as a lubricant making the massage easier, and maybe by forcing you to take extra time rinsing the shampoo off. Whatever the mechanism, it works.
> Note that some of the glands which manufacture the components of natural tears are high on the eyelid and surrounding the eyes. I suspect than pressure on those glands also helps unblock the ducts and/or stimulate the glands to work better, so I massage my entire eyelids and adjacent area.
> There is a new "machine" which is said to completely unblock tear ducts, requiring treatments only once every 3 months. The "machine" is essentially a tiny vibrating heating pad placed on the eyelids for 15 minutes -- albeit the cost of the treatments is ridiculous, ~$1200 each. With that in mind, and since I have a massage showerhead, I set the shower to fine pulse mode and the heat as hot as I can stand it. After massaging my eyelids with the baby shampoo, I let the hot pulsing water rinse off the baby shampoo and massage my eyelids for as long as I have patience (probably only a minute-- longer would be better). This seems to be the most effective strategy for me.
> Out of curiosity, I just checked, and Amazon sells heated vibrating face masks for ~40--$200, but few have convincing customer reviews, and I've found no authoritative reviews or discussions of these products. Most of them concentrate on blowing air at acupuncture points around the eye--which I suspect is useless. I'll check again in a few months. But, clearly the "need" has been recognized, and soon there may be affordable face masks for treating dry eyes that work.
