I loved this book! My son's father is in the military & this book definitely hits home! It's not an extremely long book (it does have chapters), but I started reading this book & couldn't put it down! I read the entire book on my lunch break. The author gives very good details of the life of an "army brat"...which is not a bad thing at all. When I read the book I could picture everything because it's so detailed. It's also funny & would be great for small children, teenagers & even adults as myself (I'm 32). It's not only for military families, it's for every family because it tells of how the soldiers fight for us & keep us safe on a daily basis. It is definitely a great family book! I loved it & if you purchased this book you would NOT be disappointed! The book was so good I purchased 3 copies for family members aging in range from 5-9 years old.
Enjoyed this story. The precocious little girl, Glory, helps you see from the inside out the challenges of children of members of our military. Joining Forces with Glory brings understanding to those who may never have considered those challenges. It also makes a welcome connection with the whole family of those who were or who are current members of the military. Nice work Lisa. OIF Arifjan.
Joining Forces with Glory is a fast read. It tells the story of a young girl named Glory Halle Lujah. When you say it fast you get the first part of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic". That alone caught my attention. Glory is starting yet another school in just three years. But she has spunk. On her first day of class she surprises her teacher by asking the class if they have any questions for her. From the questions asked of her, I realized how much of the English language young readers would not understand. For example, Glory lived in a fort. As the heroin of the story she had heart. Such an easy read with so many wonderful feelings.
...to know the subject so well. Lisa Mallen clearly writes from experience and from the heart. Probably few of us writing history ever think to look at childrens' books addressing the military, but we should do so more often. "Joining Forces" combines clear, concise writing with a strong message that will benefit youngsters of all ages. The introduction shows that Mallen lived in nine states and two foreign countries, so obviously she's "been there, done that." Through Glory's eyes we see some of the challenges that service kids face with each move--a new school, new classmates, learning who's who and how to adjust to unfamiliar conditions, repeatedly.
Throughout this short, helpful book, the author provides positive reinforcement for youngsters, and gives parents and other adults a rare perspective. You can read it in about 15 minutes, and it's time well spent.
Thanks for sharing your patriotic message, Lisa! Terrific short story about Glory, such a creative name! Her spunky, yet sensitive character was enjoyable to experience!!! We loved reading Joining Forces with Glory! Is a sequel coming? Having been a former Air Force Pilot and now wife and mother of 7, the story was perfect for helping kids to understand the lives of military kids better and to appreciate that freedom comes with a price, both for those serving and for their families! My husband also served as a pilot in the US Air Force, and we know our kids are so appreciative and thankful that both their parents have helped defend the United States of America and FREEDOM. Thanks for getting the message out, Lisa! Happy Memorial Day weekend to you and thanks to all your family members who have served in the military over the years around the globe! You have a great lineage of which to be proud! May God continue to bless America and protect the lives of those willing to sacrifice their lives for the safety and security of others!
Joing Forces with Glory by Lisa Mallen - a most enjoyable and enlightening book. I purchased one for my son's family (3 children 8-2), which is a military family. Although the children were very young when he was first deployed to Afganistan, they enjoyed the story and how clever Glory was in helping her classmate to get over his anger and share with the class the story of his mom. They were excited to know that Lisa spent her young life moving aroung just like Glory did and as they do. I enjoyed the book also and purchased two - one for our school library and the city library. We also enjoyed her first book Elton the Elf.
Joining Forces with Glory is a touching, real-life story with several lessons in life for children and adults. As an adult, I found the book very engaging and was eager to pick up where I left off. I have already shared with a 11 year old who also "loves Glory". Very well written and appropriate for issues children are faced with today.
