My dog is a heavy chewer, and it wasn't long after I brought him home I realized I needed to get him more durable toys. I had an old ball that looked similar to this that I originally bought for my other pup, but she wasn't into it. I gave it to my new pup, and over the course of a year, the only problem with it are tears from the mouth corners, and the netting on the back is torn off. The toy I had though was a bit small for him - as he is a 50 lb Husky / Malinois mix.
So, I went in search of a similar toy and found this. I liked the size - 4 inches is a size just right for him to chew on and carry around. The wide mouth makes it easy to spread peanut butter into. [My dog loooooves peanut butter - in moderation.]
The mouth is somewhat divided into two sections. It isn't exactly divided, since the middle doesn't reach all the way to the "teeth" but it is really just for added support so the dog can't open it real wide and get it stuck on their nose, and it makes it more durable. But, with that, you could put two different flavors, or types of treats in there. Previous reviews mentioned freezing the toy with spreadable treats inside - and I think that's a wonderful idea that I need to try! Just going to get some plastic baggies first so it isn't touching my human food.
When the package arrived, it's like my dog knew this toy was for him. He eagerly awaited while I opened the box, and took out the toy. His eyes widened, his tail wagged and he slowly tried to reach for it with an open mouth. I held it a little higher and said "Well, let me take the tag off first!" So I ripped the tag off, and let him take it. I truly believe it was love at first sight! This is now his favorite toy, doesn't even matter if it has treats in it or not!
He's chewed on it everyday since I got it a few weeks ago, and nothing is wrong with it. Well, besides the netting on the back side. That is pretty much gone, but I threw the pieces away, and he's content with this little thing.
My only complaint is the "squeaky-squawky" sounds he makes with his teeth, chewing on it in the middle of the night. But, as long as my pup's happy, so am I.
It truly feels as though it should be sturdy. Sadly, it's not. I'm annoyed at spending $6 for 25 minutes of play. Not a good return on my money.
Oh, some context: my dog is about 30 pounds (some sort of lab and maybe Vizsla mix). So, she's not some 200 pound mastiff that could swallow this thing like a baleen whale. Utter and complete crap.
If your dog is food-motivated or gobbles meals too quickly, this encourages them to slow down and get distracted. My small dog has separation anxiety, so each time I leave the house, I put a frozen patty in the Monster Mouth and this occupies her for a long time while i slip out the door. This has drastically cut down on anxious yelping and barking.
If the treat or dog food it too big the dogs give up at the end and usually have a couple pieces still in the toy (highly unusual for a Lab to leave any morsel of food).
5 stars for sturdy material and it can hold a lot of food. I was able to get 2 cups of one of my dogs food in the dispenser (this does depend on food morsel size)!
