His 8 week program was geared at patients who were highly at risk so it is expected that he would work slowly with them. After all, these patients would have to practice what they learned for the rest of their lives and their doctors have entrusted him with their wellbeing. Accordingly, if you are healthy and or just starting to feel the aches and pains of getting older, you can still use his techniques for meditation and yoga; and even safely accelerate the time frame. This is especially true if you are already practicing yoga or are familiar with yoga movements, e.g., through a formal class or a yoga book like Chopra's, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga.
I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because it appears to me that Jon marketed this product without adequately explaining the history and goals in the first CD or the booklet. His plugging of his own book is also adding to the confusion that I see in the reviews. His program in the 1980s was created when the medical professionals who were students in the 60s and 70s still remembered that only the crazies in California and especially at Berkeley were into Gurus and Yoga. If you are familiar with yoga as I mentioned above I don't think you need to purchase his book. The only exception that I would make is if you are one of those persons who are in constant physical pain as Jon's patients are, then the book could be very helpful--especially in following up with your doctor and medical insurance company.
I would recommend the CD set because he integrates meditation and yoga into a whole, similar to what Chopra attempts to do in the above cited book. The added value that I get from Jon is that his techniques are founded on his extensively documented and successful track record with his patients. My goal is to live a long, healthy, pain free life that is free from pills for pain, high blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. And I believe his program can help me keep my focus on the right path.
The good:
The CD's arrived quickly, well packaged (from a shipping standpoint) and in good shape. They worked fine and contained what they were stated to contain. All that isn't really saying much for a CD set, so that earned this product 2 stars.
The bad:
The packaging is not well thought out. The box took me a minute to figure out how to open. It wasn't a puzzle, just more difficult than it needed to be. And it's hard to take the CD's out of the cardboard sleeve pack without bending the pack back and grabbing the CD firmly with your fingers leaving a big fingerprint on the CD. It's not easy to grasp the disc by the edges as one normally would. Again, it's not super difficult, just harder than it needs to be. The box is also one of those that if you put the CD pack in the wrong way, you can't close the box, because the tab will jam into the CD pack instead of slipping behind it. We've developed really effective cheap CD/DVD cases over the years that work, that people intuitively understand, and that are widely available. I just don't get why the publishers of this set chose what they chose.
The first thing I did was load the CD's into iTunes so I could listen to the tracks on my iPod. Well, the CD's imported with different titles and different arrangements of the artist's name. So, some came in as Jon Kabat-Zinn and others came in as Kabat-Zinn, Jon. Different album names, too. It's as if the CD's were developed separately, then just thrown into a pack together for publishing. So it required some manual work on the ID3 tags to get it to sort right. I understand that this may be more of a problem with the database than with the CD's, but I'm just saying it was another problem I had with this set.
The first CD did not align well with what was taught in the class. It served to confuse and derail my learning curve. The content of the first CD, the body scan meditation, really came across to me as a Progressive Muscle Relaxation exercise. Our MBSR instructor stated emphatically that the body scan was not PMR and didn't even come from the same roots as PMR. Also, I'll note that I found Kabat-Zinn's voice reminded me a great deal of Woody Allen, who I find really annoying. In class, I found that some people really liked his voice and others found him extremely irritating. And, I found that I was not the only one who thought this was a PMR exercise. Since these CD's, as I understand it, were developed from and for MBSR classes, I would think one would want good alignment.
One class member pointed out that UCSD has their own version of these same meditations available for free download on their web site, so we could try them with a different voice. I did that. I found that the UCSD version was not only a better voice, but it aligned perfectly with the principles in the class and focused on awareness rather than relaxation as one would expect, and it was a breakthrough for me in my meditation practice.
I don't even use these CD's any more. I abandoned them after two weeks in favor of the free UCSD versions which I continue to use even though I am no longer in the MBSR the class.
Stress Relief: By following the prescribed course, I was sleeping better and less stressed out at work as early as week 3. I finished out the course and found the effects only got better. I think that if you are using this system to address problems with sleeplessness, stress relief or anxiety, it's really important to follow the program and it will work wonders. I've continues to use the Body Scan (CD 1) periodically when I have trouble falling asleep and it never fails.
Meditation: I also purchased this because I was interested in getting more into meditation. In that sense, I really only find the Seated Meditation (CD 3) useful and I do continue to use this multiple times per week. I think it is an excellent introduction to meditation skills if you do not come from (or aren't interested in coming from) a more spiritual background. Kabat-Zinn manages to get to the heart of mindfulness/awareness without referencing specific traditions, so I think that is huge for newbies who may be intimidated or see the spiritual tie to an unfamiliar tradition as a barrier to beginning. Additionally, there is now new-agey imagery of walking in a forest or being in the mist or whatever, which I often find annoying and distracting.
I do think that pretty soon (been about 10 weeks now) I'll need to move on. Now that I have become proficient and maintaining my own focus and awareness, I find the encouraging break-ins actually distracting rather than helpful (as they were when I started out). But, like I said, a great introduction.
