About Jonathan Garrett
I have lived my entire life in rural Oklahoma, looking out across near-empty pasture land marked by a few patches of trees here and there. Much of that time has been spent in school, learning the sorts of things that every kid's got to know, but I always had some free time to stick my nose in a good book. Fantasy, mostly, but a some scifi as well and little horror. Time passed and I eventually graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University with a bachelor's degree in accounting. Even so, I always wanted to have some part in the creative arts. I tried my hand at everything from drawing to meager attempts at movie-making, but never figured I had the skill to actually make it anywhere.
Around the time I graduated, I'd been writing off and on for several years and even had a story that I'd been slowly putting together, though I'd never been particularly serious about it. But when graduation finally came and it was my turn to head out into the world, I decided that I didn't just want some stable job somewhere, I wanted to build a career doing something that I absolutely enjoyed. Since then, I have turned my efforts to finding that elusive "good story" and then carefully crafting it into a good book. At present, I have seven completed novels, several of which are nothing more than object lessons and several of which are actively seeking an agent. It's a lot of work, but also a lot of fun.

Blog postI wasn’t able to get quite as much writing done last week as I wanted to, but I was able to get in some much-needed research. Specifically, I was researching the early 20th century labor movement, focusing on the tactics of the early unions and the steps that were taken by corporations and politicians to curb their power and end labor strikes. What I found is that this was a very chaotic time in our country’s history.
Many people feared that unionization was a big step in turning8 years ago Read more -
Blog postThese days, it seems like something crops up every day that keeps me busy. That’s not all bad, of course, but it does mean my writing progress is often slow and haphazard. Even so, I’m still pushing ahead with the third Allison Newberry mystery. My goal last week was to get up to 10k words. I didn’t get that far, but I’m currently really close to that goal. So, it’s still coming along. Things are a little bit different with this story, thanks in part to new characters and a new setting, but i8 years ago Read more

Blog postThe goal this week is to get back into the swing of things. For various reasons, I haven’t been to get much writing done lately, but I’m hoping to have the time this week to change that. As I mentioned earlier, I’m starting work on the third Allison Newberry mystery. So far, I’ve got a good idea to work from, an interesting new location, and a brand new case that’s gotta be solved. The current word count is roughly 7,200 and I’m hoping to write at least 1,000 words per day, at least while I’m8 years ago Read more

Blog postThis week has been spent mostly on working on what I want to write next. I’ve got lots of ideas, some of which are more developed than others, but what I have ultimately decided to work on next is the third Allison Newberry mystery. I feel like I have a very good basis to work from and a story that will be worthy of being the next step in the series. At present, I’m not ready to actually get into the details just yet. Suffice it to say that it will continue to live up to the legac8 years ago Read more

Blog postHow long has it been since I last posted an update? Too long! Well, a lot of things have been going on and I just haven’t had the time to really do any writing [or edit work], so I haven’t had anything to post about. That’s just how it’s going to be moving forward, I’m afraid. Less time for writing, more time on other matters. I certainly wish that wasn’t the cast, but that’s life.
Anyway, so what am I doing? Right now, I’m thinking about what I want to do next. I’ve got a fantasy sto8 years ago Read more -
Blog postIt’s been much too long since my last update. Well, I got busy this week and just didn’t have the time for much of anything else, unfortunately. So, starting today, I’m going to post a continuing series on characters, how I write them and why I write them the way I do.
Part 1 – Complex Individuals I’ve written a lot of different characters. Young characters, old characters, male and female. With every single one of them I’ve always tried to make them feel as much like real people as p8 years ago Read more -
Blog postThis week is much the same as last week. I’m still working my way through Beyond Sand and Sky, which is coming along very well. Unfortunately, this phase of writing is fairly slow, because I’m actually doing a lot of rewrites along the way. Just about every sentence in the story is being reworked for quality, coherence, and length. A lot of the sentences were just too long and too convoluted, owing to me going through a phase of wanting more complex and interesting sentence. It sort of worked8 years ago Read more

Blog postEyes of Diamond, Hair of Gold is now finished and available for sale. This was a big project for me, not necessarily in length or the complexity of the story, but in writing a sequel that would continue the tradition set by the original story and exceed it in the ways that it needed to be exceeded. I feel very confident that I was able to do that. Blog postWhile working on a draft of book that I wrote some time ago, which I hope will become the final draft, I’ve been focusing on sentence length and sentence readability. This story was written during a phase where I wanted to create more complex and interesting sentence. In some way, this work. In other ways, it left behind sentence that were far too bloated and had too many parts. This wasn’t necessarily a problem when I was only hanging on to the story for my own personal interests, but n8 years ago Read more

Blog postWhat is this series about? When I decided to start writing a mystery [before that I had written science fiction and fantasy almost exclusively], I wanted to write about murders that were a bit different from the norm. The idea was to set up situations and cases that other detectives didn’t necessarily want to deal with, either because of their sensitive nature or because of their perceived complexity.
So, the case would fall to one detective in particular: Allison Newberry, a junior8 years ago Read more

Marshall Elias Watkins is brought in to investigate the massacre at an isolated outpost, where nothing was taken and none of the survivors saw a shooter. The only clue left behind is a line of spent shell casings resting atop a nearby ridge.
Marshal Watkins isn't the young man he used to be, but a case like this needs somebody who's seen just about anything and has the nerve not to turn away when the end is in sight. But he's never seen anything like this before. Together with the best lawmen in the Known Lands, he determines to track down this killer and bring him to justice. Their quarry, however, is no ordinary man and his killing isn't over just yet.
His trail leads them into raider territory and the irradiated zone and then across the mountains to the east, where no one has ventured near in almost a century. The marshall and his band come face-to-face with all the horrors of a world wrecked by war and radiation, where even a past that seems dead and buried can still come back to haunt the living.

Bringing together eight of my short stories, this collection focuses on the search for one’s place in the world, the struggle between transgression and redemption, following the lives of numerous individuals as they embark on perilous journeys in search of answers. Sometimes that journey is merely living one day to the next.
The Blasted Lands – A mysterious traveler journeys deep into a twisted desert land, in search of something that may very well be the most valuable thing in the world. But the horrors of fabled Iron Town are not to be underestimated.
Illuminus – Two young boys who live day to day, scrounging out a meager existence in a dark and dingy world, find a ray of hope in the most unlikely of places.
My Mechanical Soul – After a series of bizarre incidents involving synthetic humans, two police officers, one human and the other synthetic, take charge of the case and find that there’s something sinister afoot.
In Another Time – Two scientists must venture out into the world they’ve spent nearly four years monitoring when their situation starts to become dangerous. But it’s not the world outside the walls of their research outpost that they must be wary of.
These Tattered Dreams – After the world ends, two robots, one a simpler laborer and the other a deadly assassin, go in search of the last remaining humans.
Two for the Money – Lister Yves is suddenly pulled from his dull existence by an excitable young woman named Mia, who saves him from a band of murderous thugs by kidnapping him. Unfortunately for Lister, that’s just the beginning.
Pollen – Jace has lived his entire life allergic to a particular type of pollen that has spread out over the entire world, leaving him completely isolated in a lonely existence. Everything changes when he meets Ginny.
A Day in the Life of a Dark Lord – It’s tough being a Dark Lord, particularly when you aren’t a very good one. Gordon Lightwater is not a very good Dark Lord.

The Eminence of Bardon Roket
Mar 29, 2012
$2.99
Consider Bardon Roket, a child of just twelve years, a dreamer of big dreams. And what dream resides within the mind of Bardon Roket? Why, a plan to conquer the entire world, of course.
In the world of adults, it's tough for a child to get anything, so Bardon's got to start small. Just a lemonade stand at first, a simple thing suggested by Nicholas, an enthusiastic youth who is among Bardon's initial group of partners. Also joining him are the strangely-fascinating Jenna and the positively-ancient Ardy. Each day, inexplicably, brings in more and more money. Never one to question dumb luck, Bardon builds and expands as he moves ever higher among the political and corporate spheres that rule the City.
But as his power grows, so to do the numbers of his enemies. Ambitious men in positions of authority are good at sniffing out their own and they realize all too quickly what Bardon is planning. Roadblocks and back-room dealings, even an assassination attempt or to. There is little that his enemies will not attempt in order to prevent Bardon Roket from making his dream come true.
Away from his ambitious work, Bardon slowly grows closer to his partners, even going so far as to see them as the first friends he's ever had in his young life. But Jenna is special. There's something about her that he can't quite figure out. As Bardon reaches closer to his elusive dream, he begins to wonder if all this power and wealth is truly what he was wants out of life.
THE EMINENCE OF BARDON ROKET is a satire of the corporate and political worlds coupled with a coming of age story.

Murder at the End of the World
Jan 27, 2012
$1.99
When the wife of a politician is murdered in the isolated port-city of Illdara, junior detective Allison Newberry is sent in to keep the case from growing cold. It's the assignment that no one else wants to deal with.
The case is immediately complicated by the nature of the city. Everyone is cold and unfriendly, unwilling to answer even the most basic questions from an outsider. Even the chief inspector is more concerned with Allison's eventual departure than with the actual outcome of the case.
To make matters worse, clues are scarce and little about the murder makes sense. No attempt was made to hide the woman's body, nor was her money or jewelry taken. The initial investigation turns up nothing but dead ends. Then a second victim appears: a homeless man killed in exactly the same manner. A single clue is left behind, the petal of a flower, which leads Allison to the darkest corners of the city.
The suspicion and paranoia, the empty buildings and empty streets, the whispers of strange happenings in the night, it's clear that something is wrong in Illdara. Somehow it all ties back to the murders, somehow everything makes sense, but Allison constantly struggles against the very nature of the city to try to find some clue, some shred of evidence that will bring the killer to light. Something is wrong in Illdara, something very wrong, and it may put Allison's life in danger.
Even so, murder has been committed and there's still a murderer out there who needs to be brought to justice.
MURDER AT THE END OF THE WORLD is a mystery novel that blends elements of fantasy and horror with the traditional detective story.
