Top Customer Reviews
The camera itself performs flawlessly and I can say that it may even have somewhat better picture quality at 1080p 30fps than the street guardian which costs twice as much. The rating of 2 stars is because of an installation issue and the poor/horrible quality software that accompanies this camera.
Installation: Typically, when you get a dash cam you want to install it permanently and not just plug it in to a cigarette lighter. After all, the damn thing will be in the car with you all the time and having wires hanging from a windshield is not ideal. The wire that comes with this camera is not made for permanent installation because it has the cigarette lighter adapter on one end and about 2 feet from the other end is the GPS antenna which you cannot unplug so if you attempt to "thread" the wire behind your car trimming you will find that it is impossible to do so. I had to cut the wire close to the cigarette lighter plug, run it behind the side panels and then solder the plug back on.
Smartphone software: I used my iPhone to set up the camera and I have to say that the iPhone application is poorly made at best. The interface does not have many words in it and it displays icons that are not intuitive at all. It seems that it was made by an engineer that speaks little to no English and “user friendly” was not part of his vocabulary. For example, when you connect and open the application, it displays the message “Get all settings” but it is not asking you to press on anything to get all settings rather it is just informing you that it is getting all settings. Other typos also exist in the few messages that have words in them.
Update 6/27/2016: I tested with a Samsung tablet and the Android app works flawlessly. If you have an android device, you will be happy with the app. On the other hand there was an update to the iPhone app and it is now worse as it will not connect 9 out of 10 times and it keeps crashing when you hit "Back".
Note: If you think that you will use your smartphone to view live picture of the camera, you are mistaking. It is slow and buggy but that is not a problem because I take it that the live view function is only for adjusting and pointing the camera to the right direction once you mount it. By the way, during live view, you may lose the function buttons from the screen and even if you find them you may not be able to return to the main screen.
Player software: The player simply does not work! I keep getting script errors from the player trying to access google maps every time the mouse rolls over the map. Furthermore the window size cannot be adjusted and the speed is not displayed correctly. I have a feeling that the same engineer got involved here too. Also you can only play the recorded segments and not the trip as a whole. The street guardian works great with the “Registrator Viewer” software but this camera uses two types of files and the “Registrator Viewer” does not work great with it. Yet the “Registrator Viewer” does recognize the trips better and displays GPS and speed data correctly. So I find it unacceptable that the software designed for this camera is useless and the “Registrator Viewer” software is the one that somewhat saves the day.
ALSO: The CD has a file called “Driver.exe” which is nothing more than the K-Lite codecs pack. If you have Windows 7 or later, this is useless. AND! None of this software is digitally signed so you are not sure if you are installing the dash cam software or some kind of spyware. I downloaded the latest Windows software (also not signed) from the site and that is useless as well because it does not have a player and does no more than the iPhone application (as a matter of fact it does less, no live video feed).
In conclusion: This is a quality camera as far as hardware goes and it is a shame that the software is useless because if you are not good with video file viewing and editing on your computer, you will most likely find this camera useless. For the record, the PC I tested this software on has an i7 processor, 24GB memory, 512GB SSD and it is currently running Windows 8.1.
Would I recommend it? All I am going to say is that I bought 2 of them and I did not regret it because although the software sucks, I know that I can extract the recorded video segments when needed. Hopefully they will provide a good player in the future and make this a camera everyone would like to have.
Update 6/4/2016: More problems with the iPhone app and the wireless of the camera. I find that I keep getting prompted for the wireless password and when I enter it, the iPhone is prompting for it again as if I entered the wrong password. I have to turn off and back on the wireless on the phone and power cycle the camera in order to be able to connect to the wireless. After I connect to the wireless, I often get a message from the app that the camera is not connected. After many tries, I get the camera connected and although I get the message "Get all settings" the actual settings of the camera are not correctly displayed. For example, I know that I put the camera in motion detection but when I reconnect my phone to it, it sometimes shows that motion detection is off while I know that it is on since the camera does record on motion detection as expected. Same problem with the video out setting which I keep turning NTSC on and when I connect again, the app displays PAL.
Another annoying thing is that when the camera is set to motion detection, it records 1 minute files only (although I have it set to 5 mins) and keeps skipping 5 to 10 seconds between files even when the car is in motion. Also, the description in the joovuu-x.com website says that the camera will capture the previous 10 seconds before motion was detected and that does not work at all (I have the camera plugged in an "always on" socket).
Finally, when you select the resolution 1920x1080 30fps HDR, you get a message that with HDR FOV should not be used because it may hang the camera. Yet, the FOV settings are from 155 to 60 so how do I know what setting does not work with HDR?
What is worse is that you cannot just keep changing settings for testing since the app may or may not display the current settings of the camera and the pain to connect and reconnect is too much in order to try various settings.
I am updating this review because the camera that I have installed in the car has been failing after 4 months. For the past month I kept finding the camera reset to factory defaults including the time and date. This past week, I kept hearing the camera beeping while driving and it seems to be going in a power cycle every few minutes. The indicator will blink a few times green and then start blinking red again. I did not call their support yet but I do not see that this is anything different than a hardware failure (perhaps due to the summer heat cycles that it went through). This camera is connected to the same power source and power adapter as the Guardian that I have in the front windshield. Both cameras also have the same exact 128GB memory card and while the Guardian keeps blinking away and at this point I trust it enough that I do not even check, the JooVuu is failing and this is very disappointing. Now, I understand that summer heat conditions inside a locked car under the sun can be brutal but if it cannot take it, it is nothing more than useless for a dash cam. As a last effort, I will swap the memory cards to verify beyond doubt that that is not the problem but I am not hoping for much. You may want to consider not to have the camera on 24/7 so it can survive the heat when you have your vehicle parked. To be fair, after about the same amount of time, the Street Guardian developed a problem where it does not record audio correctly (comes and goes) but at least that one keeps recording video. Tonight, I unplugged the JooVuu because the beeping is now annoying and keeps reminding me that my money lasted only 4 months and that was not even care free. I will leave it with 2 stars because I believe that it would have survived much longer if I had it turn off when the car was off.
I replaced the memory card and the camera started working correctly again. The memory card also showed errors during a full format.
The memory card that I replaced is once more failing. The Street Guardian camera that I have for the front is still blinking away recording without a problem with the memory card I put in since I installed it (before the JooVuu X) and the memory cards are identical. It seems that this camera kills the memory cards and since this one died through the winter, it is not an ambient temperature issue.
There is so much I love about the JooVuu X I almost don't know where to start.
* Reliable, boots up virtually instantly after I turn on my car. Has never failed to capture a moment of video while I am driving.
* Razor sharp high bit rate video with natural looking colors and incredible image detail.
* 155 degree field of view with surprisingly little distortion, most other cameras have fish eye distortion that drives me nuts. The field of view is user variable if you prefer a narrower field of view... that level of flexibility is a big PLUS for me.
* Discrete, this camera is so small it is virtually invisible from the outside of the car as I have it installed in the area behind my rear view mirror.
* WiFi connectivity, you can connect to the camera via an iOS or Android app to aim the camera during setup and monitor video while it is recording
* Last but certainly not least is SUPPORT. The manufacturer is very hands on and responds to questions and provides regular firmware updates as they are on a quest to continuously improve the product. There is no price you can put on this.
Bottom line is I love this camera and would not hesitate to recommend it.
