Editorial Reviews

From the mid 1970 s until his death, Cuban born Jorge Bolet was considered one of the world s truly great pianists and one of the last representatives of the great Romantic tradition of pianism. After winning the Naumburg competition in 1937, Bolet seemed set for a great career, but war intervened. His big break finally came in the 1970s, when he was signed to Decca and went on to make many award winning discs. But what of the early years? Here, for the first time on CD, are the four LPs he made in the 1950s. These almost unknown recordings are sure to fascinate and fill an important gap in the mystery of Bolet s early career.

This is a collection of Jorge Bolet's first recordings from the early 1950s. The CD contains what were originally four LPs - two from Boston Records and two from Remington Records. Both of these are long defunct labels, thus these recordings were never before available on CD. Anyone familiar with Bolet's work will find a few familiar pieces such as Liszt's Funerailles. Many of these pieces, however, are unique Bolet recordings - such as the Saint-Saens Etude en form de valse from the Boston Recital Favorites album (B-301). Recital Favorites is perhaps the rarest commercial recording by Bolet (I have seen only 2 or 3 copies for sale in the past decade). Included also is the Boston "Airs of Spain" (B- 300) which contains pieces by Spanish and Cuban composers. These latin pieces were a significant departure from anything else Bolet ever recorded, and indeed they do have an airy almost minimalist feel to them.

The Remington recordings consist of the four Chopin Scherzi and the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.2. As the excellent liner notes by Farhan Malik point out, the Prokofiev 2nd with the Cincinnati Symphony under Thor Johnson (Remington199-182) was the first recording of this now familiar work. Up until that time the 2nd was rarely even performed. Bolet's performance is still one of the finest ever recorded. It is far more lively and dynamic than his later performance recorded with Ainslee Cox/Nuremberg Symphony. The final LP included is the Four Chopin Scherzi (Remington 199-161). Bolet gives a bravura performance in each of the Scherzi and it makes you wonder why he did not record these more often.

Finally, I have to commend the excellent job done to transfer these from LPs.

I knew this was a 2-CD album, but did not realize all the music I was getting. My adopted Mom, who is Cuban, had a chance to live temporarily in an apartment in NY where Bolet practiced before his NY concern in 1947 or 48. She loved listening to him and was delighted to have this album. We all have enjoyed it immensely. Nice variety from classical to Lecuona, to De Falla and other composers. They are grouped together so it makes for a varied, but smooth listening experience. It also showcases some of Bolet's versatility.

Not expensive CDs but great piano playing in very decent sound, These are recordings Bolet made before he became famous, but not before he was worth of fame. Several others have praise his account of the Prokofiev 2nd piano concerto. It's here with much more. One CD has works for piano solo, the other the Prokofiev and the Chopin Scherzos. Both are very listenable.
