This book of Jose Marti's letters and essays is fantastic

i only knew about jose from fidel castro calling him the apostle' and others mentioning him as a great poet,activist and freedom fighter. This man did what fidel and che did 60 years before to fight a revolution to free cuba and her people from spain. What a life this man had. He was the 19th century version of Che and now that i have learned somewhat about him i can see what che and fidel were talking about and hwy they emulated and tried to be like Jose from a having a boat and landing in cuba to start revolution(nearly landing in the same spot) to writing a diary,etc...To learn of your hero's hero opens ones eyes...

Melbourne, New York, London ISBN-10 1920888748 ISBN-13 978-1920888749 The first thing to remember is that Jose Marti (accent on the last syllable) was not a Marxist, since although he believed in physical battle for freedom, he advocated remedial humane change. Thus, Marti never should be confused with radical mad murders who, saying they are revolutionaries, wish and act to exterminate all their enemies. Marti was the intellectual behind the last Cuban war of independence and died in battle leading it.

I repeat Marti was a revolutionary but not a Marxist. Martí defined this well in 1883 when he said (see page 47 of this volume), in Spanish of course: "Look at this large hall, Karl Marx is dead. He deserves to be honored for declaring himself on the side of the weak. But the virtuous man is not the one who points out the damage and burns with generous anxiety to put it right; he is the one who teaches a gentle amendment to the injury. The task of setting men in opposition against men is frightening. The compulsory brutalization of men for the profit of others stirs anger. But an outlet must be found for this anger before it overflows and terrifies. " Martí died, leading in battle twelve years later; worldwide in the next century perhaps a hundred million have died because this warning went unheeded.

Marti combined his call to action with his understanding of nature. An understanding of nature that only comes from being outdoors. A powerful master of the written word, I often got lost while reading, as his writing transcended my ability to comprehend. Often I needed to read sentences 2-4 times, understanding more each time. This is the first book I read that I think deserves to be read again, maybe again. A magnificent work of seemingly increasing value as the world changes year after year. Thank you Jose Marti!

Marti ought to be better known than he is in US

Traveled to Cuba recently -- the airport in Havana is named for Jose Marti. One of Fidel Castro's great heroes it seems. An interesting character among 19th century exiles and revolutionaries. High principled, courageous, a lively mind. Still reading in this book -- haven't finished it yet. Wish I were more of one mind with him. For a revolutionary, some of his attitudes seem oddly polite and conventional to me. Not that I want rudeness, but I would like more tough mindedness, a sharper sense of how hard to resolve both the inner and practical problems of revolutionism are. It's no surprise to me he died a martyr.

Don't get the Kindle edition. I first got it, found the formatting odd, and ended getting the paper instead.

This is a hit-or-miss collection. Some of the essays are towering achievements concerning mankind and revolution. Others are less powerful and veer into ramblings about specific social systems or situations.
