Joseph Ari Aloi AKA JK5: An Archive of Sketches, Tattoos, Drawings, Paintings, and Objects Paperback – Illustrated, March 4, 2014
Enhance your purchase
The first monograph to celebrate the diverse and eclectic work of one of the true visionaries of the contemporary art world. Joseph Ari Aloi-aka JK5-is a compulsive artist for whom every free moment is an opportunity to create. Bringing together his work as a fine artist with the instincts and references that color his passions of tattoo and graffiti art, JK5 has an expansive, textured, and highly individual visual vernacular. Whether as a painter, illustrator, calligrapher, or designer, JK5 is preoccupied with the collision of personal and revelatory themes with profound pop-cultural iconography, resulting in a powerful and readily identifiable style.
This creatively designed monograph features work that extends from paintings on canvas to plastic vinyl toys, from storyboards for animation films to collages and scratch cards, and from outlines for tattoo work to a vast collection of sketchbooks-each completed with such regularity that they serve as a kind of artist diary, recording his changing preoccupations and varying visual interests. Edited by the artist-with contributions from fellow artists Mike Giant and Kenzo Minami-and designed to reflect the varying and tactile nature of the work, this is an artist's book that will exist as a unique and collectible object in its own right as much as a record of the remarkable output of one of the most prolific voices in contemporary art.

"Dipping into this first monography by Joseph Ari Aloi is like finding a glyphed-up notebook by the best artist in your high school. Your eyes devour it before you give it back and say "Hey man, could you draw one of those for me?" This book captures Mr. Aloi's fire, sure line and his love of, well, everything." -New York Times

The art in the book seems crumbed and squeezed onto page. It is very detailed, with a lot going on on a small space. There are layers and layers of illustrations. That’s the artist’s style. Some pieces have words, that are absolutely not possible to read. The art seem sometimes psychedelic. But this is what makes the art unique.
Using different kind of media, but mostly marker, pen and ink, Joseph creates one of a kind art pieces. Some seem cartoonish, children like. The characters are so imaginative and colorful. Some are more mean, or meant for mature viewers only. You can look at one piece and keep finding new elements hidden within.
Some art seem to scream at viewer.
Maybe this form of art is not for everyone, but I for sure find it entertaining and peculiar.
The book contains small entries about Joseph and his art, written by family and friends. Sometimes Joseph tells the background behind his work and art exhibits. Few times he writes about hid personal family affair. But it is not a biography, or memoir at all. Mostly it is collection of his work. Unless we call it memoir in form of art. Those short paragraphs are more like journal entries, accompanied by tones of illustrations.
There are also scans from Joseph’s sketchbook. There are examples of his hand drawn creations. I saw Joseph’s sketchbook at the show and it is itself a piece of art.
This is definitely interesting book to have on your shelf. And I am positive, that every time you will rich for it again, you will find more things in the art,you missed seeing before. You can explore each piece over and over again. This collection will make infinitive source of fun.
